magician says
only a myth
The idea magicians always
have something up their sleeves
is a myth according to magician
Dickie Dean, "Generally very
few magicians have anything up
their sleeves. Today I had
nothing up my sleeves, hon-
est, " laughed Mr. Dean.
Dicky Dean gave a 20 minute
display of magic to about 100
Bendix employees and their
families at the Bendix Christ-
mas Party in the Hensall arena
last Sunday.
Mr. Dean pulled colored
doves out of newspapers, and
.scarves out of thin air. He pour-
ed milk into a newspaper cone
and not only did it not spill,
the milk disappeared and the
newspaper was not even wet.
He got scarves out of news-
papers and playing cards out of
thin air—and the crowd loved it.
"I don't usually do shows for
children," said Mr. Dean after
his performance, "Marg, my
wife, does magic shows at
schools, libraries, birthday part-
ies, things like that. She is a
good magician."
Marg also serves as Mr.
Dean's assistant on stage and
is a very important part of the
showmanship involved in put-
ting on a good act.
Mr. Dean took two summer
is
courses at ages 15 and 17 at the
Hollywood College of Magic
in California where he learned
stage presentation and tricks,
especially slight of hand,
like working for adult
audiences," says Mr. Dean.
"They appreciate the card
tricks more than the children
do, and the card tricks are pure
slight of hand." The decks used
by Mr. Dean are ordinary
playing cards, but it takes years
of practise and technique to
successfully manipulate them
the way he does,
However, Mr. Dean's most
famous trick is one he calls'
the Vampire Ball illusion. Mr.
Dean dons a vampire mask and
cape, dims the lights and some-
how manages to make a golden
ball move by itself over and
behind a scarf he holds with
both hands. The ball seems to
rise and fall at will—the trick
is excellently .executed and
fascinating. In fact, Mr. Dean
has featured this illusion across
Canada and on television in.
both the United States and
Canada.
Mr. Dean is based in London
but works anywhere from
Prince Edward Island to Mani-
toba. For a magician, August
is the businest month of the

year,
"There are a lot of fairs and
things in August," explained
Mr. Dean.
The advantage of having a
talkless magic show is the
Deans get a number of book-
ings in Quebec. You don't have
to be bilingual to appreciate
good magic.
Mr. Dean has also written
a book on magic, which he had
on sale in Hensall, Sunday.
The book contains 350 different
tricks and illusions all using
basic items found around the
house. The language of the
book is 'geared to the young,
anyone over the age of 10
can understand and do the
tricks if they work at them and
they don't have to have baggy
sleeves either.

In the end council approved the
increase in milage rates as well
as an increase in the per diem
rate for Councillors. That rate
will be increased from $44.00 to
$46.00 for a full day or night
meeting and from $27.50 to 28.50
for a half day meeting. The
Warden's Honorarium was in-
creased by the same motion by
six per cent for 1977, from
$2,500 per annum to $2,650 per
annum.
Warden McCute heon told the
meeting that increases for the
council members were often left
without moving up "to reality" so
that one council was left with
having to make one large in-
crease.
The increases he said were in
"keeping with the times."
