The Exeter Hawks were in
action on three occasions this
week in Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" league
play this week and came away
with an even split.
Thursday night in Port Stanley,
the Hawks and the Port Stanley
Lions battled to a 7-7 draw;
Saturday night in Seaforth,
Exeter club downed the Seaforth
Centennaires 5-2 and Sunday
night in Zurich, the Hawks were
on the short end of a 7-6 score to
the Tavistock Braves.
The Hawks will travel to
Tavistock Friday night for a
return engagement with the
Braves and will be at home at the
Zurich arena Sunday night to
meet the Lucan Irish. Game time
is 8 p.m.
A rash of penalties kept the
Hawks in continuous trouble in
Sunday's loss to Tavistock.
Captain Steve Jennison was a
frequent visitor to the penalty
box being called for minor
penalties on no less than 11 oc-
casions.
The Hawks battled back from a
6-1 deficit at the end of the second
period with five straight goals in
the third period only to lose on a
Tavistock score with only 42
seconds remaining in the game.
Lyle Rosendale scored two
goals and Keith McKay added
one successful shot to give
Tavistock a comfortable 3-0 lead
at the end of the first period.
The first Exeter goal came
from the stick of John Van
Gerwen on an unassisted effort at
the 30 second mark of the second
period with Tavistock playing a
man short.
In the remaining minutes of the
second session, Bill Rhode, Scott
Learning and Jim Currah
counted for Tavistock to up the
score to 6-1.
The Hawks came out flying in
the third period and scored twice
before two minutes had elapsed.
Defenceman Phil Knight
converted a pass from Paul
Brooks and Fred Mommersteeg
fired a successful shot on a three-
way combination with Ken
Pinder and Phil Knight.
Near the eight minute mark,
Brain Taylor blinked the light
behind the Tavistock net on a
pass from Steve Jennison and
four minutes later John Van
Gerwen scored his second goal of
the night on a play started by Ken
Pinder.
The Exeter club put on ad-
ditional pressure and were
rewarded with the tying goal at
15.17. Gerald Weido was on the
firing end with the assist going to
Brian Taylor.
Lyle Rosendale scored what
proved to be the winning goal for
Tavistock at 19.18.
The stars for Exeter receiving
the McKnight's Men's Wear
awards were Fred Mommersteeg
and Ken Pinder.
