Zurich Citizens News, 1976-11-24, Page 1MIA crri(Dh NO. 47-FIRSTWITH THE LOCAL NEWS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1976 Hay ratepayers meet 20c PER COPY Recreation main issue in Hay Recreation was the main issue at Tuesday night's Hay township ratepayers meeting in the township hall in Zurich, Close to 50 ratepayers showed up at the meeting, and they did not hestitate to say they felt more money should be given towards recreation in the township. The ratepayers wete inform- ed by councillor Tony Bedard, the one mill, $3,500, which was spent on recreation last year was distributed among Hen- sall, Exeter, the hardball diamond just outside Zurich, the Dashwood ball diamond and the Zurich arena. The Zurich arena received the lion's share CROSS COUNTRY MEDAL WINNER -Bill Livingston proudly wears his gold medal won at the Intermediate Boys Cross Coun- try meet held a few weeks ago. Photo by McKinley of the money, $1,000. Joy Hogg asked the council members where her tax dollars were going, if only one mill of them was going to recreation. She said "One mill seems so little for an arena (Zurich) that is being used by so many people. Where are our taxes going?" When there was no immedi- ate response from the council she demanded "Do none of you know?" Clerk Wayne Horner respon- ded to this question saying anyone who wanted to could come into his office and he would be happy to explain the township expenditures, Kay .Webb asked council if it would be possible to find out how much the Zurich arena cost Hay township to run be- fore it was turned" over to Zurich. She said he had heard "It was in the thousands of dollars back then. If this is true we are going backwards, not for- wards." Reeve Tinney replied that at the time the arena was given to Zurich they said they could make it pay. He added, I don't see any of them here tonight. A ratepayer responded to Mr. Tinney's statement by saying "I don't feel we should hold this against them (Zurich). I don't think that is the issue, we all use it (the arena) and we aren't paying our share." At this point Councillor Wilder said "We've paid $1,900 in the past two years (to the Zurich Arena). I'm not saying it is enough, I think it should be more. I have kids using it •too." Mr, Wilder suggested there should perhaps be a plebiscite across the township and if everyone wants five mills add- ed to their taxes for recreation then he would pay his share. Mr. Wilder criticized the press for being, in his words, unfair by insinuating in an editorial that Hay had offered Zurich nothing for the arena when in fact they' had given $1,000. Councillor Bedard informed the ratepayers the recreation committee knew Zurich wanted $3,000, but that the recreation committee had decided one mill would be sufficient. Deputy reeve Joe Miller ex- plained the recreaton com- mittee is supposed to draw up a budget and then it is approved by council. He felt any quest - Sprucing core set aside Planner Nick Hill's proposals to the Zurich Business Associa- tion concerning the sprucing up of the core area in Zurich have not been forgotten -they have just been set aside for a while. Ron Heimrich, president of the Business Association says they decided at their last meet- ing to wait until after the Christmas Season to begin working on the renovations pro- posed. Mr. Hill had offered his assis- tance in setting up some work- shops to give further help to the business people wishing to spruce their businesses up, Six accidents investigated, only four persons injured Six accidents were investigated by the Exeter OPP this week, with injuries being reported in only one of them. C. rrectlon In last week's paper, we stated Zurich's representative to the Huron -Perth Separate School Board was Treffley Jeffery. Mr. Jeffery is going to he on that school hoard, but lice represents Flay and Bayfield, not Zurich. Zurich's member on the Huron -Perth Board of Edu- cation is Michael Connolly, representing Zurich, Hensall and 'I'uckersmith. We are very sura for any inconvenience this error may have caused. however, Mr. Heimrich feels it will probably be around Feb- ruary before anything further is done in this direction. Painting is out of the question with the present weather condi- tions, Mr. Heimrich pointed out, and with the busy Christ- mas season ahead it seemed best to postpone any work- shops or further discussions in this area. ions or complaints about the size of that budget should be directed to the recreation com- mittee, not the council. However, Mr. Sangster, a (continued on page 2) r ;; ire Damage was estimated at $400 when a car caught fire on County Road 2, Saturday.
