Two fie!d trips approved
On the recommendation of the
director of education the Huron
County board of education ap-
proved two applications for
student field trips at its
November meeting.
One was for 10 students from
grades 11 and 12 at South Huron
District High School to spend the
weekend of November 11 to 14 in
Bruce County on Rankin River
and Boat Lake. The excursion
involves only one school day,
November 12.
Cost of the trip will be $10 for
each of the students with an
additional $62 necessary from the
board to cover the cost of one
supply teacher.
Teachers Bruce Perry and J.
D. Marshall will be in charge of
the excursion,
The other trip approved was for
a group of 44 students from F. E.
Madill Secondary School in
Wingham to visit Quebec. The
board will provide $316.80 for part
of the trip, the balance being paid
for by the participating students.

To The Editor:
It is with considerable chagrin
that our four year old has been
rejected for kindergarten by the
Huron County Board of Educa-
tion because this child isn't five
by December 31, 1976.
A letter from the Board in-
dicated that similar requests
have been reviewed frequently
and that the Board has decided
not to amend their policy. It
would seem to me if this is a
frequent request that our Board
of Education should be re-
examining this policy and the
taxpayer has every right to ques-
tion their decision re this policy.
This policy has just recently
been bent to allow a child an ear-
ly admission to a kindergarten in
our county due to a physical han-
dicap and it is understood that he
will attend two years in
kindergarten.
I personally feel that this is a
decidedly good step to allow this
admission and with the same
token that the existing rigidity
should not exist when parents
request early admission but in-
stead the Board without extra
cost could request that the
Health Unit do a Denver
Development test on the child in
question.
This test has been done by the
Public Health Nurses in our
county for some time on the pre-
kindergarten child to determine
school readiness.
Another resource area is the
personnel working in the Day
Care Centres. These people are
well qualified to determine a
child's readiness for school.
Many parents are aware of their
child's abilities and this opinion
should be a .consideration as
well.
Thank you for this opportunity
to express a viewpoint that is
long overdue for some ratifica-
tion,
June Martene

Dear Editor:
Sincere appreciation to the
citizens of Zurich and surround-
ing area for the excellent sup-
port received by the Zurich
Lions Club during their recent
campaign for funds for the
Canadian National Institute for
the Blind.
Through cooperation of all,
we have been able to surpass
our objective of $900.00 by
about $75.
Certainly everyone realizes
that such a campaign is a
"means to an end". The "end"
being of course the provision of
a brighter and meaningful
future to the blind, not only
in Zurich area cross the counties
of Huron and Perth which area
covers.
A very special Thank you to
the Lions members' wives for
the splendid work done in the
"House to' House" canvass in
Zurich.
Once again sincere Thanks to
all.
Claude Gelinas,
Campaign Chairman

Bd. of Education to
inform Goderich of
any lens for property
At its November meeting the
Huron County Board of
Education agreed to keep the
Goderich Recreation and
Community Centre Board in-
formed of any changes or plans in
connection with Board owned
property at Bennett and Eldon
Street in Goderich.
A letter from the Goderich
Recreation Board also notified
the Board of a motion calling for
the negotiation of a formal lease
on the property but the Board
chose not to take that step at this
time. Director of Education D. J.
Cochrane told the meeting there
seemed to be no way to know
what a lease should contain cost -
wise at this time.
The Goderich Recreation
Board has approached the Board
of Education on two occasions
with specific development plans
in the past. The most recent 6f
those called for the creation of a
ball diamond, playing field, track
and tennis courts,
"The current arena renovation
program, however, required our
full attention this year," the
letter noted, "but we hope this
will change in the new year."
