Kidney retrieval program ex
Due to a three fold increase
in the number of kidney trans-
plants performed in Toronto
over the past three months the
Metro Organ Retrieval and
Exchange Program (M.O.R.E.)
is now being expanded to in-
clude the rest of Ontario and
is co-operating with several
centres in the United States.
In an effort to generate more
kidneys and other organs for
transplantation the new pro-
gram was developed by doctors
from the four transplant centres
in Toronto, The Toronto Gener-
al Hospital; the Hospital for
Sick Children; Toronto Western
Hospital and St. Michael's
Hospital. Functioning since the
beginning of the summer, the
MORE program has a team of
highly skilled surgeons and
technicians who can be contact-
ed 24 hours a day to retrieve
kidneys and other organs that
become available in Metro
Toronto hospitals.
There are currently about
150 patients in Toronto who are
waiting for a kidney transplant.
Additionally approximately 200
patients annually enter the
Toronto dialysis (artificial kid-
ney) programs. MORE was
created because the number of
kidney transplants , was not
keeping pace with the number
of patients entering the dialysis
program. The number of kidney
transplants in Toronto has
remained at about 60 per year
over the past four years, where-
as the number of dialysis
patients have increased 20
percent per year over the
same period.
The Ford Motor Company of
Canada has donated a van for
transporting the team with the
necessary perfusion equipment
to and from the donor hospital.
It will also be used to send each
kidney to the transplant centre
having the most appropriate
recipient. "We are most appre-
ciative of Ford's support", said
Dr. Michael Robinette, MORE

Chairman. "Up to now it has
been necessary to rely on taxis,
police cruisers and even our
own cars for transporting kid-
neys. A van has become essent-
ial now that we are using
special machines to perfuse the
kidneys after they have been
removed from the donor."
The two perfusion machines,
bought by the Toronto General
Hospital with funds donated by
the Manufacturers Life Insur-
ance Company and Beta Tau
Sigma, a North Toronto Colleg-
iate fraternity, provide the
safest and most effective way
of keeping a removed kidney
healthy for periods of up to
three days. During this time,
using special tissue typing
tests, the most suitable recip-
ient for each kidney is found
and properly prepared; also the
operating room is made ready
and the nurses, anaesthetists
and surgeons are alerted.
Before the machines were
made available, a kidney had
to be transplanted within
8-12 hours of removal or else
be discarded due to the damage
that inevitably resulted from
longer delay periods. The mach -
ending
Ines are both working very well,
according to Dr. Robinette.
"Since June, we have per-
fused 16 human kidneys with
excellent results."
Many kidney donors came
from car accidents but others
are victims of different types of
head injury or brain hemorrh-
age, who, as a result become
neurologically dead and whose
organs are maintained only by
artificial means. Other criteria
are that they . be previously
healthy people between the
age of 1 to 60 with no history of
kidney disease.
MORE is fully supported by
the Kidney Foundation of
Canada—Ontario Branch, and
complements their program of
encouraging Ontario drivers to
sign the back of their driver's
permit, donating their organs
for medical use in the event of
a fatal accident.
By encouraging doctors in
the non -transplant hospitals to
consider all potential kidney
donors, Dr. Robinette hopes
that MORE will help to correct
the lack of kidneys for trans-
plantation. "Our aim is MORE
Kidneys for More People."
