Zurich Citizens News, 1976-08-11, Page 5Guest speaker at Varna to Varna to visit his in-laws, the Henry Voss, He left Toronto before dawn, at about 5:30 a.m. • (to miss the morning rush hour) and arrived in Varna about 8:00 p.m., sore and stiff but pleased with himself, passing through Galt at noon and Stratford at suppertime. Normally he rides Miss Wendy Borreson of Ceylon, Saskatchewan, and her mother Mrs. Ellen Borreson of Antler, Saskatchewan, who are holidaying in the Toronto area, spent the weekend with Rev. and Mrs. Alex Taylor. Wendy, who is a lay minister on a three- point charge at Ceylon, was guest speaker at the Varna - Goshen service on'Sunday, using the sermon topic "God's Grace is Sufficient for You". She credits the influence of Rev.. Taylor as being largely respon- sible for her decision to serve the church. You will remember Rev. Tom Sinclaire, who was here in the spring, was the per- son who brought Mr, Taylor into missionary and church work. 1t is a number of years since the Taylors had seen either of these old friends. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roczek of Flint, Michigan, spent a few hours on Tuesday evening with Mrs. Florence Elliott and Walter and Norman Smith. Also present for a visit with them was Mr. and Mrs. H. Cudrnore of Holmesville. Bill and Mary Chessell attend- ed the Gordon Jenkin—Elizabeth Pryce wedding at Winthrop United Church on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hunt are proud grandparents of a baby boy, Matthew, born to Mr. and Mrs. Preston MacCallum (Susan) of London. - Mrs. Elsie Turley of Toronto is spending the week with Jack and Margaret Hunt. A family picnic for employees of Ross Scott Fuels was held at the home of Grant Chisholm of Lucknow on Sunday. Those attending from Varna were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Webster and fami- ly, Mr. and ,Mrs. Brian McAsh and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lcppington and family. M. and Mrs. Bill Chessell, Marion and Brian attended a family picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Laing, Cromarty, on Sunday. A baby shower was held for Jennifer Lindner, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Laing. Michael Moore, 34. bicycled 138 miles Friday from Toronto y ge 1 a ,; *''i►fnt Stanley township has authoriz- ed the Huron County Planning Department to make application to the Ministry of Housing for a community planning study grant for the preparation of a secondary plan for the township. Also at council's August 3 meeting, six grants were approv- • ed to 4-H calf club members in Stanley township. Scott and Paul Consitt, John Coleman and Don, Nancy and Ron Taylor all received the $4 grant. Tile drainage loans totalling $8,500 were accepted. A by-law was passed which, if approved, will allow $100,000 to be used under the Shoreline Property Assistance Act to pre- ventfurther erosion of land. This money would be available for lending to those trying to stabalize shoreline property. Expenditures were, general accounts -$11,781; Stanley roads - $11,555; tile drainage -$11.,600; Datars-Logan Drain -$1,450; and Troyer -Reid Drain -$11,127. Stanley township has received a Wintario grant in the amount of $2,800 towards the improvement of the Stanley ballpark. The total estimated cost of the improve- ments is $11,200. So far dona- tions have been received totalling $4,000 and along with the Wintar- io grant and another provincial grant under the CRC Act for $2,800, there is only about $1,200 left to raise. Miss Lorrie Symons, Clinton, was maid of honour with attendants Miss Sandra Miller, Kitchener, Miss Donna Wilson, London and Miss Francis Armstrong, Zurich. Junior bridesmaid was Miss Louise Proctor, Clinton. Bestman was Larry McKinley, Toronto, with ushers Gerald Armstrong, Zurich; Steve Taylor, Brucefield and Clare Proctor, London. The junior usher was Dean Armstrong, Zurich. After a honeymoon to Western Canada, the bridal couple will reside at R.R. 1, Zurich. Citizens News, August 11, 1976 -Page 5 spending a few days with the Vos's,, took a week-long bus trip to the United States, visit- ing New York and Washington, etc. On their return, they rented a car for a three-day trip to Owen Sound and other places of interest up north, then came back to Varna for four days be.. fore flying home. Laura Roy spent last week at Canaby Church. Camp near Bay- field. Mrs. Ron Taylor returned home from Stratford Hospital last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson of Montreal, and their niece and her husband and son of England, spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Reid.
