Last week was set aside as
Senior Citizens' week, so .no
doubt our Seniors across the
country were celebrating in many
different ways. Since.the weather
'was not as pleasant as it might
have been, some activities were
curtailed somewhat.
A number of our Residents who
are bingo fans attended the bingo
in the Zurich arena on Wednes-
day evening. Perhaps it was
beginners' luck, but strangely
enough, several were winners.
On Thursday evening, slides
of Switzerland and Northern
Ontario were shown, Visitors
were here from the Maplcwoods
Apartments to share the pictures
after which refreshments and a
social time' followed.
On Friday evening, the regular
bingo was enjoyed at the home,
followed by refreshments. -
Mr. Joseph Boland, formerly of
Snowden Acres took up residency
in the Maplewoods apartments
this week. Most of the apart-.
ments are ready for occupancy
now, and as I mentionedpre-
viously, almost half of them are
now occupied. Landscaping and
' the driveway and parking area
still remain to be completed.
For those who have been in-
quiring concerning open house,
the Official Opening Ceremonies
have been scheduled for Sunday,
July 18th, at 2:00 p.m. to which
the public are invited.
The sympathy of Residents and
Staff is extended to the family of
the late Mrs. Alice Phillips.
The Sunday evening chapel
service was conducted by Rev.
George Anderson of Exeter
Anglican church. Mr. Gerald
McCauley presided at the organ
during the worship service.

`Army' is
counteracted
The invasion of army worms in
wheat fields in Huron County has
been fairly well counteracted by
spraying according to Huron's
Associate Agri.cultural
represent alive Mike Miller.
While Miller had good news
about the army worms, iie did
indicate their was another small
problem connected with the
quickly ripening ;wheat crops. ,
Ile said a few fields were hit
with "take -all". This is a
situation where the heads are
dwarfed or do not form at all.
Miller continued, "this situation
is not serious.
The complete plants are light
green or completely bleached.
Some of the stalks would not have
been discovered if farmers. were
not looking for the army worms."
The solution to the "take all"
- problem is to rotate crops for the
next couple of years and come
back with wheal.
On the subject of the army
Worms, Miller said the hardest-
hit sections of Ontario were in a
straight line from Essex and
Kent north through Lambton,
Middlesex, Huron and Bruce.
Ile said the moths probably
flew north on a day when the wind
was directly from the south.
suggested that a letter of ap-
preciation be sent to the St.
Andrews United Church Women
in Bayfield for their support.
A guest at the Huron meeting,
Mary Forsyth of the Goderich
Psychiatric Unit, outlined the
plans of a committee that was
formed in Goderich one month
ago. The committee's immediate
task is to identify the needs of the
'homebound in Huron , and its
