Awards night held by South Huron league
More than 150 players and
officials of the South Huron
intermediate hockey league
along with wives and friends
attended the annual award
banquet Saturday night at the
Pineridge Chalet,
League president John Ansley
told the gathering "This is one
of the best seasons we have
ever enjoyed in our ,five year
history and it's the players that
did the trick."
Ansley continued, "We have
been able to take away the bush
league or woodchopper image
from this league and it really
is safe to play here. Conduct of
the players and referees has
improved. In addition our games
start on time and we reviewed
rule changes with the teams
before the season started."
Exeter reeve Derry Boyle
who was the league's first
president in the fall of 1971
said he was impressed with the
improved calibre of play in the
league. Boyle added, "I feel
right at hone here tonight.
These are nay kind of people,
hockey players."
A total of 12 trophies were
presented to the various teams
and top individual stars.
Derry Boyle presented his
trophy to the North Middlesex
Merchants from Parkhill as the
league winners. It was accepted
by captain Ernie Schlegel and
executive director Adrian An-
sems.
Parkhill also received the
Robert -Galloway Dairy Farm
trophy as playoff champions.
This trophy was presented by
Danny Galloway.
Shipka Colonial goal tenders
John Hayter and Joe Arnold
combined to win the Dash-
ood Industries trophy for
compiling the lowest , goals
against average.
Mike Chalmers of the champ-
ionship Parkhill team walked off
with four individual awards.
He won the John Galloway
Memorial trophy as the league's
top scorer, the Bayview ,Tourist
Tavern award as the top playoff
scorer, w inner of the • first star
award and the Crediton club
trophy as the league's most
valuable player.
Ernie Schlegel, also of Parkhill
won the second star- and third
spot was shared by Ed Molloy
and Jim Laird of Arkona,
The three star trophies were
donated by referee -in -chief
Pat O'Brien; Parkhill United
Co-operatives and Tuckey
Beverages.
Brad Datars of the Exeter
Mohawks was named the most
improved player winning the
Royal Bank trophy and Bud
Gardiner of Shipka won the
Exeter Co -Op trophy as the top
defenceman,
The most valuable player in
the playoffs proved to be Ernie
Schlegel. of Parkhill. He won the
Robert Galloway trophy,
