Zurich Citizens News, 1976-03-17, Page 13Want storm sewer check The Ontario Ministry of Trans- portation and Communication will be asked by the village, of Grand Bend to do an inspection of storm sewers on Highway 21 in the village. The sewers which were install- ed as part of the connecting link program by the province in 1964 are apparently causing numerous problems for nearby residents. Councillor Bill Baird, a resident of the area in question .told council and a representative of the Highways Ministry that water is backing into basements. When told by Reis Dirksen, Still A Few Left PORTABLE ELECTRIC GENERATORS Run your furnace, freezer, sump pumps, etc. 1500 Watts $329.95 2000 Watts $415.00 3000Watts.... $529.00 BeReadylflt Happens Again! DRYSDALE HOME HARDWARE 262-2015 HENSALL from' the highways engineering office in Chatham that the sewers were originally designed to carry surface water only, Baird replied, "When the sewers were installed any drains carrying only clear water were to be hooked up. But the sewers don't appear to be deep enough and water backs up. Baird continued, "I think the sewers were designed poorly in. the first place. I don't think they worked properly two years after they were installed." The provincial engineer said the first complaint heard from Grand Bend came this year. 12 years after installation. To this comment Baird replied. "Boy, some of the complaints sure must have been bypassed. Councillor Bob Simpson commented, "This isn't funny, but it is." Dirksen said when projects of this type are being planned, the design engineers usually check the municipality regarding any foreseen problems. Reeve Bob Sharen commented, "Council likely overlooked these basement hookups and the Ministry didn't point them out." In closing discussion before the. resolution for an inspection was made Sharen said, "There's no doubt that there is something wrong. I would guess that the openings are too small, I would also suspect there was faulty workmanship in the first place or blockage taking place now." AN OPEN FORUM Council has been invited to attend an open forum to be held at the North Lambton Secondary School in Forest .onApril 2. with London-Lambton MP Larry Condon. Subjects to be discussed include inflation, unenmploynient. government spending and capital punishment. The brief discussion regarding the meeting centred around captial punishment. Reeve Bob Sharon commented, "I think something should be done about capital punishment. He was strongly backed by councillor Bill Baird.
