Zurich Citizens News, 1976-02-25, Page 7Belmont take three to regain series lead The Exeter Hawks find them- selves on the brink of elimin- ation in the first round of play in the Ontario Hockey Assoc- iation Junior "D' western division. After winning the first two games of the best -of -seven series over the Belmont Ronwood Bombers, the Hawks lost three consecutive games this .. week. The sixth contest was played Tuesday night at the Zurich arena. Wednesday night at Belmont, the Bombers won 5-3, they took the fourth game in Zurich. Sat- urday by a 5-4 score and Sunday on home ice at Belmont they won by a score of 7-3. In Belmont Sunday they were in the thick of contention for al- most two periods. They held a 2-1 edge at the end of the first 20 minutes of play and it took three Belmont scores in the last two minutes of the middle frame to erase the Exeter margin. After Barry Landon opened the scoring for Belmont early • in the first period, Brian Taylor hit for the Hawks on pas9es from Gerald Weido and Matt Muller and John Van Gerwen converted passes from Rick Grenier and Ken Pinder. Rick Landon, Paul Logan and Barry Landon scored for Bel- mont in the middle frame and Paxil Buchanan, Darrell Simpson and Lane counted in the third . period. The final Hawk score came from the stick of Gerald Weido on an unassisted effort with less than two minutes remaining in the game. FAIL ON POWER PLAYS The failure of the Hawks to take advantage of numerous Belmont penalties, especially in the second period proved to be costly in Saturday's 5-4 loss. Midway through the middle frame. the Exeter club enjoy- ed a two. man advantage for at least six minutes. They did score two goals during some of the penalties but failed on many other opportunities. Belmont took 22 of 35 penalt- ies called by the officials. -The first period ended in a 2-2 deadlock. Fred Mommersteeg scored the first Hawks goal on a three-way effort with Ken Pind- er and Noel Skinner and Pinder found the Belmont net on an unassisted effort. Gary Armstrong fired both Belmont scores in the first period. Rick Landon shot Belmont into a 3-2 lead at the 35 second mark of the second period but the Hawks came back to gain the lead with two successful shots in the balance of the period. Gerald Weido tied the score on a good solo effort and John Van Gweren put the Hawks ahead for short time as he finished off a play started by Ken Pinder and Fred Mommer- steeg. Belmont held a wide edge in territorial play in the third period and only excellent work by Randy Lovic in the Exeter nets kept the score to 5-4. Barry Landon scored the tying and winning goals for Belmont in the third period. Wednesday in Belmont, the Hawks stayed with the Bombers for only the first period. • Fred Mommersteeg notched the only goal of the first period for the Hawks on a pass from Noel Skinner. With Belmont leading 5=1 late in the third period, Noel Skinner hit for the Hawks on a pass from Fred Mommersteeg and Ken Pinder converted a pass from Skinner. Mommersteeg hospital Will Miller close it? Despite Health Minister Frank Miller's many hospital closings through -out Western Ontario, one home in the, Zurich area resembled a hospital Mon- day morning. It was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mommersteeg at RR 2 Zurich. Fred is the manager of the Exeter junior hockey team and two of his sons are members of the team. Saturday night Rick suffered a broken arm in a playoff game against Belmont and the follow- ing night Fred Jr. broke a leg in playoff action in Belmont. To compound the Mommer- steeg injury situation, a younger son Bob who plays with the Zurich bantams was -hit in the eye with a puck Sunday night. It was the second .time this year that the three Mommersteeg boys were needing hospital care. Several months . ago, Fred Jr. suffered a broken arm in a game in Lucan, Rick was laid low with blood poisoning and Bob twisted an ankle while at school. Fred Jr.'s current leg injury is actually a broken knee joint and he will be wearing a cast for the next eight weeks.
