Reveal Playhouse
summer season
James Murphy, artistic director
of Huron Country Playhouse,
has announced that Anne of
Green Gables will headline the
Playhouse summer season.
Anne of Green Gables is not
only Canada's most famous
musical, but a world hit. Based on
Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel
which first appeared in 1908,
this form of Anne soon became
a household word. Then there
were several film versions of the
story, including a 1956 TV
musical with lyrics by Donald
Harron, and music by Norman
Campbell.
In 1965 the newly formed
Confederation Theatre in Prince
Edward Island, the locale of the
novel, commissioned a stage
version of the musical from the
Harron -Campbell team. This
huge success has been repeated
eery year in C:liarlottetown
Stephe
tali tenders
since, with sold -out national
tours, a London (England)
version, a long run at New York's
City Center Theatre, and nu-
merous other productions the
world over.
This year, the Playhouse has
chosen this special, very Cana-
dian work to celebrate the 1976
Olympics. Anne of Green Gables
will be presented with complete
musical and dance corps, and full
orchestra. The production will
rehearse in Grand Bend, then
play two weeks at the Playhouse,
and two weeks on tour to locations
throughout Southwestern On-
tario.
The huron Country Play'.iouse
1976 Festival of Summer Theatre
opens June 30 and runs to Labour
Day, featuring four comedies
and four musicals. The other
seven productions of the season
will be announced March 1.
At its recent meeting Stephen
township council concurred with
a request from Huron county
that county rates be collected
in two installments in 1976.
Beginning this year payments
for county rates will be due on
June 30 and December 15.
According to clerk Wilmar
Wein Stephen township who
also has a collection dare of
June 30 has been making interim
payments earlier in the year and
receiving discounts.
Road superintendent Frank
Mcisaac has been instructed
to call tenders for the supply
of 20,000 cubic yards of gravel
to be spread on township roads
in September.
At the same time Mclsaac
will be calling tenders for the
purchase of a three-quarter ton
pickup truck for use by the town-
ship's road department.
Mclsaac was also instructed
to make plans for the design
criteria to build up the Concession
"B" line road from Highway
81 to the Gore Road, a distance
of about two miles.
Three township municipal
drains were provisionally adopt -

The engineer is C. P. Corbett of
Lucan.
Tenders are being called by
the engineering firm of Gamsby
and Mannerow for construct -
tion of the Waterloo street drain.
This is a joint project between the
township of Stephen and the town
of Exeter.
A grant of $50 was approved
to the South Huron Agricultural
Society for the Hensall Spring
Fair. In addition five calf club
members in Stephen will each
receive $5.
Earlier in the year,township
council members agreed to keep
their salaries at the same rate
as a year ago. In order to make
up for the honorariums which
are now frowned upon by provin-
cial regulations, the reeve will
receive $40 per meeting and the
deputy -reeve $35 per meeting
he attends. Councillor pay is
$30 per meeting.
Clerk Wilmar Wein said the
new rates per meeting will take
care of the previous honorariums
but he added, "There is no
increase from 1975."
Manpower
aid students
Canada manpower is establish-
ing offices again this year to
serve the special needs of area
students. The Goderich office
will be located in the Federal
Building in the former Farm
Credit Office. The Huron Park
office will be located in the Huron
Park offices of Manpower and
Immigration,
While the official opening will
take place March 22, registrations
are being taken now from those
students and employers wishing
to get an early start on their
summer plans.
James Barnes, 29, a resident
of the Village of Nile, has been
appointed Student Placement
Councellor. He has worked
previously in the Goderich area
for the Federal Department of
Public Works and as a personnel
manager in local industry.
Jim is spending the first few
weeks visiting local employers
to introduce himself and deter-
mine their student needs. He is
also visiting all the area second-
ary schools to register students
and give advice on where and
how to find a summer job.
Jim hopes that any employers,
farmers or homeowners with a
need for students will make use
of his services by calling 542-2744
or 228-6651.
