Zurich Citizens News, 1976-01-07, Page 14Feels council has achieved much, Sharen will not seek re-election Reeve Robert Sharen of Grand Bend announced Monday night that he does not plan to seek re-election to his post. The statement came as the reeve was reviewing the year's activities of council, pointing out what each of the individual councillors had accomplished. He stated he was proud of the council and thought they had each done a good job, adding that there was always room for improvement. Contacted by the News follow- ing the meeting, Reeve Sharen said his decision not to seek re-election was due to the heavy burden political activity was put- ting on his business and personal life. He stated that the amount of time necessary to do a good job in the position of reeve was impossible for him under the present circumstances. Mr. Sharen also noted that criticism of an insulting nature had discouraged him. He said the business and personal factors far outweighed the criticism which had appeared in a weekly newspaper, 'The North Lambton Sun'. Mr. Sharen said that he and his fellow councillors knew they were not perfect by any means but that they had all given a good effort on behalf of their com- munity. He suggested the village was in a far better position at present than when he took over as reeve, mentioning balanced budgets had been one of the major accomplishments of the present council. The January meeting also appointed committee chairman and set the wages for the council and fire department. Reeve Robert Sharen will receive $40 for each regular meeting attended and $15 for each special meeting. The reeve was appointed as council's representative on the Ausable- Bayfield Conservation Authority and on the police liaison com- mittee. Deputy reeve Roland Grenier will be paid $37.50 for each regular meeting and 512.50 for each special meeting. He will chair the public works, roads, park and green area committee and will be council's representa- tive on the Grand Bend Public Utilities Commission. All other councillors will receive 535 for regular meetings ROBERT WESTLAKE INSURANCE Specializing in GENERAL INSURANCE 236-4391 ZURICH GUARANTEED TRUST CERTIFICATES 1 YR 2 YRS 3 YRS 4YRS 5YRS 9 1/4% 9 1/4% 9 1/2% 9 1/2% 10% J.W. Exeter and Usborne will have their share left at 50 and 30 percent respectively, but the Stephen share has been reduced from 14 to 12 percent and the Hay portion boosted from six to eight percent. Tlie new figures take into account extended service in Hay and a reduction of the territory covered by the Exeter firemen in Stephen.
