Board raising
arena funds
With a new arena as its goal
for 1978, the village of Bayfield
.community centre board has
begun the task of raising the
$226,000 needed to pay for it.
Board chairman John
Siertsema said about 40 people
attended a public meeting Thurs-
day night to support the proposed
arena and improvements -to the
community centre portion of the
building,
The old arena was condemned
by the province in 1976 as unsafe.
He said the village was allowed
to operate the arena last year un-
der strict monitoring from the
province but this year it decided
not to bother.
He said the board hopes con-
struction of the new arena can
begin next spring.
The old arena ice surface was
less than standard size and
Siertsema said the board is con-
sidering expanding the width and
length 10 feet each way. That
will depend on how much money
can be raised.
Siertsema said $160,000 of the
$226,000 will be used to replace
the arena. The remaining $66,000
will go toward upgrading the
sewage system and enlarging the
existing community centre.
He said the committee will be
looking to raise about $60,000
from the village and will ask the
provincal and federal
governments, and Goderich and
Colborne townships to make up
the remainder.
Many of Bayfield's 531
residents are senior citizens who
use the community centre and he
said improving it is as important
to the board as building a new
arena.
The village council has not ap-
proved the proposal but Reeve
Ed Oddliefson said he supports
the plan in principle,
Oddliefson said he understands
the .residents are prepared to
back the project and service
clubs have already raised $13,000
toward the project.
