An example to be followed by
Situated on the west end of
town is a building that has long
been a part of the Zurich scene.
For many years the Kalb-
fleisch Planing Mill transformed
the native stands of timber into
one of basic building materials of
our time -lumber.
After the plant had lay dormant
for a number of years six area
men pooled their resources and
formed Zurich Wood Products
Limited to be located on the old
planing mill site.
DOING THE JOB — As with many small industries the management
works right along with the employees and Ray McKinnon, president of
Zurich Wood Products is no exception. Staff photo

John Blay, Ray McKinnon,
Harry Hohner, Albert Hoffman
and two `silent partners' began
organizing the company in 1966
with actual production starting
early the following year.
A caption from a photograph
from the February 9 edition of the
Citizens "News read `Albert
Hoffman and John Blay,
president of Zurich Wood
Products Limited are engrossed
in packaging units of pre-cut
lumber which they are currently
under contract to supply to a
'certain firm, Enthusiasm at the
local plant for the success of
Zurich's newest manufacturing
outlet is running high as the
number on staff there has risen to
about 20 persons.'
Today the organization is much
the same with Ray McKinnon
assuming the president's position
and Earl Flaxbard, vice-
president in charge of
manufacturing.
The main products produced
today are pallets and export
crates with most of these sold to
firms in London, Huron Park and
Chemical Valley. A total of 11,000
pallets and 17,000 export crates
and boxes were manufactured
last year. For trivia fans, over six
million nails were used in the
construction of the products.
Most of the wood is obtained
within a 150 mile radius of the
plant with Brantford supplying
the softwood and the Mount
Forest -Walkerton area sending
large amounts of hardwood to the
firm.
Competition in the industry is
quite stiff according to McKinnon
and Flaxbard with 50 large firms
and as many as 200 one or two
man operations involved in the
manufacture crate -type
products.
Products constructed out of
aluminum and plastic have
started to make a few inroads
into the industry but not to any
great extent McKinnon said.
The company plays an im-
portant role in the economic life
of Zurich with 14 employees
presently employed and a payroll
of $150,000 annually.

squad lose
Last Monday the Zurich
bantam B team played the
Parkhill Arrows losing 4-2.
According to Kevin Oke "the
first goal was scored by Danny
Becker with a nice wrist shot to
put the puck in the right hand
corner of the net. The next goal
was scored by Chris Denomme
by using a slapshot that went
under the goalie's stick."
munities.
IMPORTANT OPERATION — One of the more important operations
at Zurich Wood Products is the operation of the neither which is a
machine that removes a piece of wood roughly six inches long from the
bottom slate of a pallet. Harry McAdams is the operator of this ,
machine. Staff photo
