Hensall 4-H clubs meet
• Eight girls showed labels or
samples of processed fruit for the
roll call for the third meeting of
the Apple Dumpling Gang
Hensall Unit 1 4-H Club at the
home of Dianne Gerstenkorn on
Tuesday, October 4. Discussion
for the evening was "Fruit the
year round" which includes
fresh, frozen or dried. Starr
Jesney and Brenda Pepper
helped the leaders demonstrate
the making of raspberry
bavarian cream and apricot fluff.
The raspberry cream is a jello
salad which also could be served
with whipped cream as a dessert.
The apricot fluff is a hot dessert
which was very tasty.
Plans for achievement day
were discussed, with each girl
selecting the name of a fruit with
which she must make a dessert.
One serving of this dessert must
be taken to achievement day.

4-H Club was held October 4 at
Hensall UCW mark
Thanksgiving
The Thanksgiving meeting of
the Hensall United Church
Women was held on Monday,
October 3, in the Fellowship Hall,
Mrs. Ken Elder and Mrs. Bob
Cook led the devotional based on
the theme of love and sharing.
Elaine Townshend, the speaker,
told of her personal life as a
handicapped person, of the
founding of A.L.P.H.A., its aims
and achievements.
It was decided to accept an
invitation to put on a birthday
party at the Bluewater Rest
Home in November. Unit 2 will be
in charge. A donation of $100 was
voted to the Hensall arena fund.
It was announced that a bale
would be packed for Angola on
October 25, as well as the usual
one to London. It was also
decided to sell United Church
calendarsagain this year at a
charge of $1.25.
Enrichment day will be held at
Centralia United Church on
October 18, when workshops on
committee work will be held.
Mrs. C. Christie had attended
the tenth annual Westminster
weekend and gave an account of
the inspiration and help she had
received,
Unit 2 of Hensall United Church
Women will meet this month on
Monday, October 17, instead of
the usual date.
Joyce Pepper's home. Raspberry
bavarian cream and apricot puff
were made and tested. The
group discussed different types of
frozen, canned and dried fruits
and how to use them. Different
fruits were assigned to each
member for achievement day.
The Hensall Unit 3 4-H Club, the
Horn of Plenty, held their third
meeting on October 4 at Janet
Bilcke's house at 7 pm. Thegroup
discussed frozen, canned and
dried fruits and their uses and
learned several new measuring
techniques. Leaders, Betty Beer
and Janet Bilcke* demonstrated
the recipe peach layer dessert,
which was the snack for the
evening, served with hot tea and
hot chocolate.

Margaret Fuss has been
visiting with her mother, Mrs.
Harry Fuss, for the past month
and has now returned to her
home in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Elizabeth Volland, who has
been a patient in Exeter Hospital
has returned to her home with
Rachael Schwalm.
Mr. & Mrs. John Batten, Mr.
Ralph Batten of Elimville, Mr. &
Mrs. Ken Kadey of Huron Park,
Mr. & Mrs. David Passmore,
Tom and Jon of Thames Road
were supper guests with Mr. &
Mrs. Hans Gerstenkorn and
family for Thanksgiving.
Sam Oesch celebrated his 84th
birthday on Tuesday, October 4..
To help him celebrate he had
visitors -- Mr. & Mrs. Ray McNull
and family from Fergus, Paul
Flaxbard and friend from
Toronto, Mr. & Mrs. Ross Cooper
and family from Ingersoll, Mr. &
Mrs. Earl Flaxbard and Ruth
Ann from Zurich, and Mr. & Mrs.
Clarence Waddell and Sandra of
Hensall.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Smith at-
tended the christening of their
grand -daughter, Megan Bridget
McGuire, at Erin Roman
Catholic Church on Sunday and
stayed over the weekend.
Andrew Mason has been
visiting with his grandparents,
Mr. & Mrs. John Skea, for the
past week. On Sunday, his
parents, Mr. & Mrs. Randy
Mason of Huron Park, visited and
Andrew returned home. Also
visiting on Sunday were Mr. &
Mrs, George Turnbull and Colin
from Toronto. On Monday, Mr. &
Mrs. John Skea, Junior, Colin and
Karen visited with Mr. & Mrs.
John Skea, Senior.
Hear Glen Findlay speak
WI holds County rally at Howick
Mrs. Cecil Pepper and Mrs.
Carl Payne attended the
Women's Institute County rally
at Howick Community Centre on
Monday, October 3. The speaker
was Glenn Findlay, teacher at
the E.C. Drury School for the
hearing-impaired at Milton. He
described the different methods
of teaching those who cannot
hear and their achievements. It
costs around $18,000 to put a deaf
child through school, compared
with about $6,000 for a normal
child. After graduation some
study vocational school trades at
Hens
Hilda, Payne
Bertha McGregor
George Brown Commtthity
College in Toronto, or the Galidet
University in the States.
During the all -day rally , which'
over 100 attended, there were
reports from the Historical
Society and the Family and
Children's Services of Huron
County (formerly the C.A.S.).
Although no bursaries were
presented last year, the bursary
fund was used to help five
children. The speaker, Richard
Boonstra, urged the members to
contribute to the fund this year.
The two new County home
economists were introduced.
They told of courses being
presented to 4-1-1 Clubs and those
planned for next spring. Seniors
are to have courses in the spring.
"Personalise your pattern"
training school will be on
February 21 and 22, or 23 and 24,
in Wingham or Clinton. There is
also to be a food forum on March
15 in the evening. "Tricks with a
mix".

A report on the Women's
Institute s role in the 1978
ploughing match near Wingham
was given. Depending on
available space, a rest area will
be set up, with displays from
various committees in the
organization. The W.I. are also
asked to help with ushering and
the official banquet. Mrs. James
Drummond was appointed to the
ploughing match committee, as
representative of Huron South.
Several of those present wore
the outfit specially designed for
Huron County women at the
match. These are completed by a
brooch badge, with name plate
attached, if desired.
Next year, the rally will be held
in Londesboro on the first
Monday in October.
