Senior citizens of Zone Eight
(Huron County) were very
surprised when the Lieutenant
Governor of Ontario, The
Honourable Pauline McGibbon
paid an unexpected visit to their
picnic at St. Christopher's Beach,
Goderich, on Sunday. Mrs.
McGibbon is honorary president
of the Senior Citizens of Ontario
and was in Goderich to unveil two
plaques in the town, one at
Courthouse Square and one at
Harbour Park in honour of the
Queen's Silver Jubilee. In a short
speech, The Lieutenant Governor
greeted those assembled and
wished them well. She also
reminded them that as seniors
they were still able to contribute
to society. Before leaving, she
signed a get -well card to ailing
Zone President, Mrs. Mary Greg.
During the business session, it
was decided that Mr. & Mrs.
Harry Baker would be delegates
to the convention at McMaster
University August 15-17.
Mrs. Zerback of Stratford,
secretary for Ontario offered to
help any clubs needing
assistance. Any executive
member may be invited to help
clubs. They will not go to clubs
unless invited.
Buckeyes set
for tourney
The Zurich Buckeyes fastball
team are going to Elmira
Saturday, August 13, and Sunday
August 14, for their next tour-
nament.
They played their first game at
the Brussels tournament against
the Lucan Irish Nine and won 7-3.
Zurich scored one run in the
first inning, as Rick Schilbe's
single to left field was missed and
rolled to the fence for a three -
base error, allowing Rick to
score. Lucan in the first inning
came up with a pair of runs to
take a 2-1 lead; however, it was
short-lived as Zurich rallied for a
two -run in the second inning. The
big blow was a two -run single by
Cliff Gingerich.. Ken Clarke and
Isidore Laporte, who had singled
in the inning, scored the two runs.
The score remained at 3-2 until
the fifth, when the Buckeyes
rallied for four big runs to take a
7-2 lead. Cliff Gingerich started
the rally with a single. After Ken
McKinnon's pop up to third, Rick
Schilbe was safe on an error.
Wayne Clarke then singled, to
load the bases. Dereck O'Brien
followed with a single, scoring
with Cliff -Rick. Then a single by
Ken Clarke scored two more, as
Wayne Clarke and Dereck
O'Brien raced home.
Lucan scored one in the fifth,
but Zurich maintained their four -
run lead. Leading the Zurich
hitters were Ken Clarke with
three hits, and Rick Schilbe and
Cliff Gingerich with two hits
each. Wayne Clarke, Dereck
O'Brien and Isidore Laporte
chipped in with one hit apiece.
Cliff Gingerich picked up the win,
as he went the distance against
the Irish, with a strong pitching
performance.
The second game for Zurich
was against Arva. They lost 7-2.
Despite the five -run difference,
the Buckeyes outhit the Arva club
8-7. A shaky defensive game led
to many of the Arva runs.
Arva scored two runs in the
first and second innings, then
scored single runs in the third,
fourth and fifth. Zurich scored in
the third on a triple by Paul
Morrison on an Arva error,
allowing the run to score. Their
second run came in the sixth, as
Ken Clarke singled and scored on
a two -out single by • Wayne
Clarke. Wayne led the Zurich
team with two hits. Brian
Hodgins started for Zurich, but
was relieved by Cliff Gingerich in
the fourth.

sistence are requisites for

growth. Mrs. John Turkheim
