still would not have known the
gravel belonged to there.
Reeve Morley said the owner of
the property William Cann had
recently died, but added that the
deceased was under the im-
pression before his death that the
agreement was no longer in ef-
fect. Reeve Morley said it was the
intention of William Cann's
widow to give the township sole
rights to the gravel on the.
property, at the going rate.
Britnell said there had been no
offer of mtrney made for the
release of the agreement. He said
the committee was agreed the
agreement was worth a good deal
of money to the county, and that
it would be good business to
exercise the county's rights to the
gravel there.
Reeve Bob Lyons, chairman of
the road committee said, "I don't
think the county can afford to
giveaway $65,000. By exercising
this agreement, the county would
0
be saved a considerable amount
of money."
John Jewitt, reeve of Hullett
said, "It appears to me it is our
gravel and I don't see how we can
just give it up."
Si Simmons, reeve of Exeter,
suggested an agreement without
an expiry date can be broken.
Britnell said he was unaware of
that,
'Yhere have been two
generations and this estate has
not been settled," Reeve Jack
Tinney said. "The agareement
was made with John Cann and
stated 'his heirs and assigns'. To
me, that sounds like forever."
Britnell told council there may
be some negotiations that could
be considered between the road
committee and the solicitor for
the widow of William Cann, but
pointed out it was up to council to
decide on the matter. Council
made no mention • of any
negotiations to be undertaken
when approving the report as
presented.
New home support
available for elderly
A new program to provide
home support services for elderly
and handicapped adults is now
underway in the province of
Ontario. Such services include
heavy or seasonal cleaning,
gardening, painting, repairs or
alterations to the home, tran-
sportation for shopping and
medical reasons and other
related home care services. The
program is not intended to
replace any existing programs'
such as Homemaking, Home
Care Services or the Nurses
Services Act.
The new program has a two
fold objective. It will provide
employment for the unemployed
while at the same time enabling
the recipient .of the services of
remain in his own ome.
John MacKinnon, ad-
ministrator of social services in
Huron County, says it is a general
philosophy that keeping the
handicapped and elderly in their
own homes if at all possible is
cheaper and better than in-
stitutionalizing them.
MacKinnon says there is a need
for the Home Support services
program in Huron County and
that it is now just a matter of
getting enough people to apply
for it. He feels sure that the
program will be well underway in
the county by September.
Each municipality has a choice
of entering the new program. The
province will pay $20 per day per
employee and the municipality
will be responsible for any wages
and employee benefits in excess
of the $20 per day and any
transportation costs. Only labor
is covered in the costs. Any
materials needed are not sup-
plied.
