"I'm trying to decide between an offer from the unemployment insurance
commission and one from the welfare department."
Clinton Hospital
It looks as though the Clinton Hospital
will remain open. Minister of Health Den-
nis Timbrell has agreed to allow it to re-
main open while a bed study is done in the
area. If there is a need for the beds, the
hospital will remain open.
Now is the ideal time to take a look at
the facilities we have in the area and
decide just what we need the most. The
Clinton hospital is very important to the
economic stability of that town and is also
important to surrounding areas for its
emergency services.
However, if you take a walk through it,
how many beds are occupied by the elderly
who are bed -ridden and unable to find a
place in a nursing home? What are we to do
with them? And what about all those who
are in nursing homes and require bed care?
When there are lists of those waiting for
space in our nursing homes who are
Madame Editor:
We are writing with regard to
the so called "Ladies Softball
Registration" which was in the
Citizen News of April 20. What we
feel it should of read was "Ladies
Softball Registration", and in
brackets (Everyone interested
other than the Bluewater). We
have very good reason for saying
this.
On Tuesday evening, fourteen
ladies from the Bluewater went
to register for softball. When we
arrived we were all told to sign
our name on a sheet of paper. We
then made it quite clear to Betty
Kirk that we had enough players
to form a team, and therefore we
didn't want to be split up, since
we've never played ball before.
She said she understood and we
could stay together. Then Jerry
Rader was called in (don't ask
me what business he has getting
involved with the ladies softball
league). Jerry then took over the
whole meeting, When told about
our fourteen ladies wanting to
stay together to form one team,
he asked where we were from,
capable of being mobile, caring for
themselves and take part in activities, is it
fair these beds are taken by the bed-
ridden?
Why not turn the Clinton hospital into a
combination emergency centre and place
for the caring of those senior citizens who
require bed care or hospitalization? This
would empty needed beds in our nursing
homes for those who can benefit from such
an environment while at the same time en-
suring those who are bedridden will receive
expert care and attention from people
specializing in such care.
This would almost ensure the hospital
would be allowed to remain open, would
keep those employed by the hospital
employed, serve the needs for an emergen-
cy centre and at the same time fill a need
which at the present is not properly taken
care of. It's worth a thought anyway.

When one of us answered "The
Bluewater", his response was,
"Oh Shit, not the Bluewater". We
then knew where we stood, and
that wasn't Zurich, The Big Hick
Town. He then asked for the
captains of each team to stand
up. Our captain stood up, along
with four others. He said we
couldn't have our captain since
they already had four from last
year, and those captains could
protect eleven players, and the
leftover players would be drafts.
In other words, our fourteen
players would be distributed
amongest those four captains. In
that case, if we were drafts and
put on other teams, we'd spend
most of our evenings warming up
the bench, since the captains
would make their better players
play most of the time being they
are experienced. You can't
blame them for that, being we've
never played ball before. He
made it quite clear that since
those four captains had played
last year, they had the
prerogative.He also said: Teams
like that, that come here with
their own players are "called
Stacked Teams". (What a laugh)
Would you believe, only one of
those fourteen ladies has ever
played baseball on a team,
What I'd -like to get across from
all this is: Why did they bother
putting an ad in the paper stating
"Ladies Softball Registration",
anyone over 15 years of age are
welcome to register. What they
should of done, is, omit this ad,
and just phone the captains they
had last year, let the captains get
in touch with players of their
choice, because that's all they
want anyhow.
Now they have enough nerve
to ask students to get sponsors for
a roll-a-thon which is taking place
in a week or so, to raise money
for recreational equipment and
supplies. Most of the ladies had
promised to sponsor some of
these students. Now that we know
how the Bluewater rates "Bull to
You Zurich", finance these
means without us, you already
have had too much of our money.
You not only lost on this roll-a-
thon, but also $70.00 towards the
arena fund.

The Zurich public school students did an excellent job in
performing Oliver for the enjoyment of their parents and
friends. A lot of hard work must have gone into the rehear-
sals and those students with leading roles should especially
be congratulated. Even those at the back of the auditorium
could hear the lines as they were spoken loudly and clearly.
Good work, now back to the same old grind.
There are probably a few sunburnt bodies around after
the excellent weekend we just had. The sun was hot in
Grand Bend and more than a few shorts and bathing suits
were on display along the streets and even on the beach. It's
enough to almost convince a person summer just might be
here, but you just can't count on it. After all, its only May.
Well, it looks as though election time is here again, and
per usual no one seems to want to take the blame for having
one.
Premier Davis says it isn't his fault because the
Liberals and NDP decide to unite to defeat the government
in a vote which the government considered a vote of non-
confidence. They were warned before they voted what the
consequences of a government defeat would be, says the
Premier.
However, the issue at stake was not an overwhelmingly
important one, as the government wished to retain the
allowable rent increases at 8 percent with the opposition
parties wanting it lowered to 6 percent, still ... the govern-
ment did wait until the last minute to announce it would
stand or fall on the results of the voting and the polls did
have the Conservatives coming up with an increase in pop-
ularity and what with the federal election coming up next
year and the minds of the people being as fickle as the polls
seem to indicate at times, it seems likely this is a good time
for the minority government to call an election to try and
regain their majority.
The Liberals too stand to gain from a June election as
they now stand as the third party in the House. The polls
have shown they too have increased their popularity at the
expense of the NDP. With the Conservatives concentrating
on defeating the NDP the Liberals stand a good chance of
coming up at least as the opposition rather than the third
place they hold presently.
I can well understand the NDP's hesitation over wan-
ting a new election as they presently hold more seats in the
Rouse than they have in some time. However, Stephen
Lewis has indicated his party is ready and the results will
be finalized on June 9.
I've seen and heard many editorials and comments in
newspapers on the radio and from people I know. Everyone
seems to have a different idea on who will win and by how
much and who really wants this election and who really
doesn't. I have heard the blame for the calling of the elec-
tion put on each of the three parties separately and in every
possible combination of the three you can think of.
There is just one thing that everyone comes back to,
and that is the facts of what happened at Queens Park on
the day the government was defeated. In spite of all the
arguments, and all the extenuating circumstances, it stills
boils down to the fact the Conservatives warned the opposi-
tion the vote would be taken as a vote of confidence and the
NDP and the Liberals decided to unite and bring the govern-
ment down anyway. Sure Davis probably wanted an elec-
tion, but all the Liberals or the NDP had to, do was vote with
the government, not against it and they would have put
Premier Davis in the position of having to call the election
himself if he wanted one. No, the opposition parties should
at least take the responsibility by saying they voted against
the amendment knowing it would likely lead to an election
and stop making excuses. I'm getting sick and tired of
listening to politicians put the blame for everything on
everybody but themselves. If they make a mistake they
should at least have the guts to stand up an d say it was' a
mistake and if they voted to defeat the government to bring
on an election then they should have the guts to say so.
And Premier Davis should not feign his innocence quite
so strenuously}, He took a calculated risk when he named
that vote one of non -confidence. He knew any election plans,
could be thwarted by the Liberals or NOP but he took the
risk and he won —• so far.
