Mitchell wins, series tied
The Exeter and Mitchell
Hawks continued to win on home
ice this week, as Mitchell scored
a 6-5 home win on Friday to knot
the series at two games each and
then the Exeter crew posted a 3-2
margin before over 800 fans in
Zurich, Sunday, to move back
into a one -game lead.
Sixth game of the series was
played in Mitchell on Tuesday
and if the seventh contest is
required it will be played in
Zurich the following night.
Both weekend games were
similar in that the home team
was hanging on to preserve a one -
goal margin at the final buzzer.
In Mitchell, the Exeter crew
had two extra attackers for the
final minute and in Zurich,
Mitchell had six forwards to
Exeter's three in the final
minute. However, in both tilts,
the home teams hung on with
some stellar netminding to
preserve the victories.
Cliff hanger
Sunday night's battle in Zurich
was a real cliff hanger and
Mitchell enjoyed a two-man
advantage in the final two
minutes as they stormed to the
attack and justfailed to overcome
the 3-2 Exeter margin.
In the final minute, coach Bob
Zimmer lifted goalie Bob Ward in
favor of yet another attacker,
giving them six skaters to
Exeter's three.
However, Randy Lovie
managed to stop all the shots
thrown his way in that hectic
final minute to preserve the
Exeter win and give them the
series lead again.
Mitchell opened the scoring at
the 14:54 mark of the first period
when Ron Elliott found the mark
on a shot to the top corner from
his blueline position.
However, the Mitchell fans
didn't have long to cheer as Don
McKeller knotted the count in
less than a minute when his low
shot went through a maze of legs
into the bottom corner of the
Mitchell net.
Matt Muller gave Exeter a 2-1
margin early in the second on a
play with McKeller and then he
scored his second of the game at
the 17:30 mark on a play with Jiro
Ferguson and Don McKeller,
Mitchell scored at the 13:49
mark of the final period to
narrow the gap to one goal and
set the stage for the dramatic
finish.
Ra Ily thwarted
In Friday night's contest at
Mitchell, the Exeter crew just
failed in their efforts to send the
game into overtime and ended up
on the short end of a 6-5 verdict,
Coach Ron Bogart lifted goalie
Laurie Skinner in favor of an
extra attacker in the final
minute, and with the team
already having a man advantage
due to penalties, they peppered
several hard shots at the Mitchell
net but were just wide on a couple
and Dave Holmes managed to
snare the other,
The local Hawks had been
behind throughout most of the
contest and were trailing 6-3 with
only four minutes remaining.
Ken Pinder narrowed the count
to two goals when he converted a
pass from John Van Gerwen and
Phil Knight the pulled them to
within one goal when he took a
pass from Noel Skinner in his own
end and raced the length of the
ice to push the puck behind
Holmes as he was tripped going
in on the net.
That goal came at the 18:38
mark and Exeter continued to
press for the next minute and a
half but couldn't come -up with the
equalizer.
Fred Mommersteeg, Matt
Muller and Noel Skinner fired
Exeter's other three goals with
assists on those going to Dave
Kinsman, Ken Pinder, Phil
Knight, Kim McKinnon, Rick
Ingram and Brian Taylor.
Mitchell had broken a 3-3 tie in
the third period when they scored
on a power play near the mid -way
mark and then added two more in
the next three minutes, the
eventualwinner coming when
captain Bob Skinner broke
through on a breakaway to beat
Laurie Skinner.
It was Skinner's first contest
since league play and he played a
steady game between the pipes in
place of Randy Lovie who was
nursing a sore foot.
Milk cheaper than coffee
It's unbelievable - but true! On
a per ounce basis, it costs less to
drink milk than it does to drink
coffee.
Take one pound of private
label, ground coffee. It now costs
about $3.60 a pound and makes 50
to 60 cups. Each cup of coffee
costs you 6 to 7.2 cents per 6 -
ounce cup. That's just for coffee.
Sugar and cream are extra.
Take a three quart returnable
jug of 2 per cent milk. That's 120
ounces of milk. It costs $1.29.
That's a little over one cent an
ounce. Six ounces of milk would
then cost you slightly over six
cents.
It's unbelievable - but true!
You can drink milk, get all that
food value and on a per ounce
basis it costs less than for a cup of
