Over $3 , 0 included
in the villages share of a
proposed budget for the streets,
sidewalks and drains committee
of the Zurich council,
Councillor Isadore Laporte
presented the committees
proposed budget to council for
approval at their meeting
Thursday night.
Included in the proposed
budget is a maintenance cost of
$21,500 plus paving of Rosalie
Street, Bismark Street, John
Street N. and East Street to Dr.
Wallaces. This would leave
council with approximately 2,000
feet of paving to do next year to
complete the paving programs in
the village.
Also included in the budget is
the John Street Drain, ex-
cavating and fill on Rosalie and
East Street s and $1,700 for new
street signs.
It was the $1,700 for streets
which attracted the most at-
tention as Councillor Leroy Thiel
felt this was excessive.
Councillor Thiel said he
couldn't see spending $1,700 on
street signs when there was no
room in the budget for work on
the sidewalks in the village. Mr,
Thiel felt the sidewalks have been
overlooked in the past and were
being overlooked again, a
situation he did not like.
Reeve Haberer agreed the
$1,700 was a bit excessive but
added the village had made a
commitment to the Chamber of
Commerce to erect at least some

new street signs. He suggested
that the number of signs pur-
chased this year should be
reduced to the main streets only.
Clerk Betty Oke reminded
council they save money on the
signs if they purchased them in
volume.
Councillor Thiel responded
unenthusiastically, saying he
could see the sidewalks were not
going to get fixed this year.
Reeve Haberer expressed his
disappointment at the inability of
the committee to recommend
sidewalk fixing in the' budget but
added it was unavoidable as the
village has been committed to its
street paving programme for
some years and the cost of the
John Street drain this year will
pretty well drain the budget.
However, Reeve Haberer
expressed hope the sidewalks
could be looked after next year
as, hopefully, there will be no
drains in 1978. That means the
money budgeted for the drains
this year could be used on
sidewalks next year 'while
keeping the budget steady.
Council voted to accept the
budget as presented,
