County councillors work hard to keep seats
Continued from Page 1
After administering the oath of
office Judge F. G. Carter told the
councillors that the first Warden
of Huron was Tiger Dunlop and
that Mr. McNeil represented the
109 successor to Mr. Dunlop, or
the 110 Warden of Huron County.
"This is fitting," Judge Carter
noted, "because Mr. McNeil was
a Scot as Was Tiger Dunlop.
Warden McNeil is a resident of
Colborne Township as was
Dunlop."
Judge Carter also predicted
that the new Warden would have
a busy year in Goderich taking
part in activities connected with
the County Town's 150 an-
niversary and with preparation
for the International Plowing
Match which is set to be held in
Huron in 1978.
McNeil, was acclaimed
Warden when the only other
candidate nominated, McKillop
Reeve Allan Campbell, withdrew
from the election before a vote
was called.
Rising to speak after his name
was placed forward for the top
county council post, Mr. Camp-
bell told the crowded council
chamber that he was as surprised
by the nomination as was
everyone else. Then he added,
"You don't have to sweat
anymore Doug, I am with-
drawing my name from the
nomination,"
The McKillop Reeve explained
that he had a standing promise to
take his wife to Florida this
winter and had decided that his
family would have to come first.
"There is no law saying I can
not try a third time," he added,
alluding to an earlier attempt at
winning election as warden when
he ran against Brussels Reeve
John L. McCutcheon last term.
"If I am re-elected to township
council, and if my health remains
good, I may try again," he said.
Mr, Campbell called on all
councillors, "especially the new
members" to speak their minds
during council debates.
"Councillors should speak up,"
he said, "good debate is an asset
to the county council,"
The new warden was
nominated by Goderich Township
Reeve Gerry Ginn. He described
Mr. McNeil as a man with the
assets of "leadership and ex-
perience."
He pointed out that the
Colborne Reeve had served on
County Council now for some six
years, the past two as chairman
of the executive committee, and
had just been acclaimed as
Reeve of Colborne for another
two years.
Outlining his background Mr.
Ginn explained that Doug McNeil
had worked for six years on a
Great Lakes Tanker. He had
served in the Royal Canadian Air
Force between 1942 and 1946 and
"like so many married following
the war and bought a farm,
Mr. McNeil, he told the
councillors, was an elder of Nile
United Church, had been Huron Middlesex MPP Jack
president of the Huron County Riddell said he would like to know
Federation of Agriculture in 1956- the secret of Doug McNeil's Closed all day Saturday
57, was a past president of the success, "If I could get my op -
Huron County Soil and Crop ponent during the next provincial
Improvement Association and election to decline his nomination
was at present chairman of the it would save me a great deal of
Board of Directors at Alexandra grief, and save all of us a great
Marine and General Hospital in deal of money."
Goderich,
let his name stand for the first
time in 1965 for a post on Colborne
Township Council.
Retiring Warden Jack
McCutcheon noted that in his
remarks on taking office last
year he had called for the highest
level of service at as economical
a level as possible. "Service
takes money," he noted, "and we
always have to stretch our
dollars."
"I have heard it said that
because the province will pay 50
per cent "we should have it", and
that the "county pays," But who
is the county? We are, and if we
can remember that things will be
better."
"We should expand services,"
he said, "but only to the limits of
what we can tax people for."
Mr. McCutcheon also called on
the new warden and council to
preserve the autonomy of Huron.
Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt
welcomed the new council back
to Goderich and presented the
new Warden with a copy of the
county town's new flag.
He told Mr. McNeil that Tiger
Dunlop had been known as the
"Warden of the Bush", but said
he hoped the new Warden would
come to be known as the
"Warden of the People."
Robert Lyons, Reeve of West
Wawanosh, Willian Dale, Deputy
Reeve from Seaforth, Thomas
Consitt, Deputy Reeve of Stanley,
Norman Durst, Deputy Reeve of
Colborne and William Morley,
Deputy Reeve of Usborne, were
named to that body.
