New lights are brighter and cheaper to run
The Zurich arena has a new
lighting system which not only
gives about twice as much light
as the old system, it also costs
much Less to operate. •
The new lighting system con-
sists of approximately 30 hanging
mercury vapour lights plus
auxiliary lighting consisting of six
eight -foot i'luorescentlights.
The reason for the auxiliary
lighting, according to arena
manager Jerry Rader i,, in case
of hydro flickering on and off. If
the hydro goes off even for a
minute, the incandescent lights
must be allowed fifteen minutes
to cool off before they are turned
on again. regardless of whether
the hydro comes back on in the
meantime, However, the
fluorescent lights require no such
cooling off period and can he
turned on as soon as there is
hydro.
The old lighting was replaced
as it was about to be condemned
and it did not adequately light up
the ice surface.
Ray McKinnon, a member of
the Parks, Recreation and •
Community Centre committee,
says the estimated cost of the
new lighting system is $6,500. The
money to pay for this will be part

Decision soon on Hensall arena
The Hensall arena ,board is
"working up to a decision"
concerning whether to repair the
existing arena or build a new one
according to board chairman
Wayne Reid.
The arena board did not make
any definite decisions at its
meeting last Friday night.
However, on Saturday several
members of the board did tour
both the Blyth and Mitchell
arenas. -
As yet, the Hensall council has
not received any official
estimates on the cost of reparing
the existing arena to meet the
safety standards set out by the
provincial government. Hensall
clerk Bob Heil says engineers
hired by the village have
examined the arena and
estimates should be available
soon,
Hensall's arena does not
presently meet the required
safety standards, but the village
has been allowed to use the
facility with careful snow
monitoring.
Markers have been placed on
the roof with coloured paint in-
dicating the depth of snow. Clerk
Heil says the arena structure„
may be used only .as long as the
depth of snow on the roof is not
over eight inches. In the case of
ice or wet snow, the allowable
level drops to four inches.
There has not been a problem
with tbo much snow on the roof so
far this year according to Clerk
Heil even though there is a lot of
snow around. It seems the winds
which usually accompany the
heavy snowfalls have kept snow
accumulations low,
However, even with the
monitoring system, the Hensall
arena only has permission from
the government to remain open
until April 15. Its status will then
have to be reviewed by the
government.
The arena board is meeting
again this week and they may
very well decide what to
recommend to council at that
time.
Snowmobiler breaks
leg in accident
A snowmobiler sustained a
broken leg in one of four ac-
cidents investigated by the
Exeter OPP this week.
The snow vehicle accident
occurred at 12:05 a.m., Sunday,
when a machine driven by
William J. Rowcliffe, RR 1
Hensall, struck John Campbell,
RR 1 Exeter, who had fallen off
his machine in front of the
• Rowcliffe vehicle.
The accident occurred on
concession 3-4 of Hay township
and was investigated by Con-
stable Bill Osterloo. Damage to
the Rowcliffe machine was listed
at $25.
The two snowmobilers were in
a group which included K. Barry
Campbell, RR 2 Ailsa Craig, and
James William Moffat, Huron
Park.
The latter two were killed less
than two hours later when the
machine on which they were
riding slammed into the rear of a
parked car in Exeter..
Three other people suffered
minor injuries in a two -car crash
on Highway 4 on Friday. The
vehicles were driven by Elaine
Ford, Grand Bend, and Jean
Little, Hensall. They collided
about two and a half miles north
of Exeter and both cars were
extensively damaged with loss
estimated at $9,500 by Constable
Bill Lewis.
Mrs. Little and two passengers,
Barbara Bleck, RR 1 Zurich, and
Brenda Hay, Hensall, were
slightly injured.
On Thursday, vehicles driven
by Morris Webb, RR 2 Zurich,
and Walter Murray, Grand Bend,
collided in Oakwood Park with
damage being set at $1,000 by
Constable Wally Tomasik.
The other accident of the week
occurred on Monday when a car
driven by Ian Fowles, RR 1
Lucan, skidded out of control and
rolled over on concession 2-3 of
Usborne. The driver suffered
cuts and bruises and damage was
set at $250 by Constable Don
Mason.
During the week, the local OPP
charged 30 people under the
Highway Traffic Act, five under
the Liquor Licence Act and two
under the Criminal Code.
of the $35,000 raised by the Zurich
Community centre fund-raising
committee.
The cost of operating the old
lights was approximately 44
rr'nts per hour. MP npw lirthtinn
County council
will only cost approximately 26
cents per hour according to Mr.
Rader, a substantial energy
saving. The lights are installed
and functioning smoothly.
Members must work hard
Newly elected Huron Warden
Doug McNeil in his inaugural
address observed that County
Council members must work
hard at their job or they would
not hold their seats. "I consider I
have worked reasonably hard on
this council to stay in office," he
said.
He explained that the decision
to seek the warden's chair had
been made last June. "I ap-
proached members of council to
see if any others would be run-
ning," he said, "and none were so
here I am today."
"We work on the committee
system here," he noted, "and
that is good. We are working
together to improve the county.
"When asked why I wanted to
be Warden," he told the meeting,
"I said it was because I was not
in the habit of looking back. We
must always go ahead and that is
what I am asking of the County
Council for 1977."
