Zurich Citizens News, 1977-01-12, Page 10Page 10 Citizens News, January 12, 1977 Over on The new Stanley township council learned at its inaugural meeting last Tuesday that building permits valued at $1,236,400 were issued in the township last year. Ninety-eight permits were issued. Clarence Rau will be Stanley's representative on the Zurich Fire Area Board for the coming year and Donald McGregor will be Stanley's representative on the Clinton Fire Area Board. Mrs. Harvey Clausius opened with a poem. Mrs. Russell Grainger read the scripture and followed with a prayer. A skit entitled "What do you do and what do you do?" was presented by Mrs. Leroy O'Brien, Mrs. Russell Grainger, Mrs. Eleanor Brown, Mrs. Mary Hey and Mrs. Harvey Clausius. The meeting was then turned over to Rev. Bruce Guy who by the use of a clipboard explained the new revised set of by-laws. The new headings are (1) Nominations; (2) Com- munications Co-ordinator; (3) Stewardship and Finance; (4) Leadership Development; (5) Church in Society; (6) Christian development; (7) World Outreach. The responsibilities of the Communications Co-ordinator are to record study materials, acquaint the society with our research centre and to publicize our activities. Iearn e Stewardship and finance must see that our M & S commitment is met and should encourage Live, Love Projects and any other United Church projects. The Leadership Development committee should promote Alma College and the Westminster weekend and attend the local workshops. The Church in Society com- mittee should study the needs of society and consider how the church can help. Christian development en- courages adult Bible study, prayer and personal develop- ment, support and attends workshops and encourages the use of materials. World Outreach committee promotes and interprets the missionary work of the United Church and overseas. The hymn "Ring Out the Old" was sung to close the program. In the business period several thank you cards were read and seven given verbally for boxes of treats received before Christ- mas. Tracy Erb and Shelly Horner sang "Forever and ever" and "Tell me why". Len Evans has been elected chairman of the Board of Trustees for Huron Country Playhouse. Mr. Evans is manager of CKJD, Sarnia. Bill Amos, Parkhill becomes vice-chairman; Jill Waters, Parkhill, secretary; Doug Coo, Grand Bend, treasurer and Mary Speiran, Grand Bend, recording secretary. W. G. Cochrane, Goderich, assumes the office of past chairman and Benson Tuckey, Exeter, holds an executive position as honorary chairman. The Playhouse met Saturday at the council offices, Grand Bend, to firm up policies, budgets and plans for the coming year. The Playhouse reaffirmed its determination to meet the financial challenge imposed by Arts Council restraints and at the same time to absorb last year's $15,000 cash deficit. Treasurer Bill Amos reported that a recent appeal for funds from previous contributors brought the Playhouse $6,374 of help toward Incurred building costs. A number of fund raising activities are planned for the coming year. "We have just completed the most successful pre -Christmas sale subscription drive in our six year history", Mr. Cochrane, retiring chairman, told his board. "This means in effect we've sold out one week, but it also represents the community's strong commitment to the Playhouse", said Mr. Cochrane. evaluators are William Caldwell and Elmer Turner. Mel Graham has again been appointed clerk treasurer and tax collector with Betty Graham appointed as deputy clerk treasurer. Donnelly and Murphy will continue to be the township's solicitors; Durst , Vodden and Bender the auditors and C.P. Corbett and Co. the engineers for the township. The recreation committee will be expanded to include 11 persons if possible. Appointed from council are Clarence Rau and Donald Brodie. Other members appointed so far are Jean Rath - well, Arnold Taylor, Gerald Hayter, Howard Armstrong, John Paul Rau, Harvey Hayter, and Mary Erb. Council has ex- pressed a desire to find two more interested persons, preferably female. Grants were approved in the amount of $100 to the Salvation Army, $35 to the Canadian Mental Health, $35 to the War Memorial Children's Hospital and $40 to Baird's Cemetary Board. The road committee was authorized to apply to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for the balance of the 1976 road subsidy. There will be an OMB hearing in the township hall Monday January 10 at 1 p.m. concerning the Houstan Heights subdivision. Rev. Taylor attended the inaugural meeting of council and offered some words of guidance to the new council. February meeting will be a quilting bee. A delicious lunch of tea biscuits and jam was enjoyed by all. I y it a Mr. Tuckey, Chairman of the Building Committee, led a motion to reject any plans for further expansion of the theatre facility and winterization of the Playhouse facilities at this time and until the present com- mitments are met. James Murphy, in charge .of artistic policies for the Playhouse, reported to the Board that he would not disappoint them use with the new summer Playbill for which he would seek approval at the February meeting. Mr. Murphy did indicate that he was seeking rights to "Same Time, Next Year," the hit Canadian play by Bernard Slade that has been playing on Broadway since 1975.
