The two day fiddling com- petition in Hensall attracts many talented musicians from various parts of Ontario. . . . It's Krazy Days again in Zurich and the attitude of the participating merchants is re- ported to be very positive. - . . A thousand people attend- ed the annual Pork Barbecue of the Varna United Church. . . . ARC trainees toured the Citizens News office to see how a newspaper is made. JUNE 30 Members of Huron County council agreed to do nothing about cutting back the number of county councillors who serve the ratepayers of Huron. . . . Records were broken left and right at the Hensall Spring Fair and Beef Feeder calf club sale as the champion calf brought $1.45 per pound. - The Huron -Perth Catholic School track and field meet was held in Mitchell and Ecole Ste. Marie brought home two gold, two silver and one bronze medals. DENNIS At the Pinehaven Nursing Home, Lexington Road, Water- loo, on Sunday, December 26, 1976, after a lengthy illness. Margretha Holtzman, formerly of 83 Arnold Street, aged 101 years. Mrs. Dennis was born in Hay Township, Huron County, a daughter of the late Gabriel Holtzman and the former Magdalena Surarus. She was a member of Zion United Church. She was predeceased. by her husband Jabez, in 1943. Surviv- ing are two sons, Cedric of Fergus and Ivan of Kitchener and by grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her family, predeceased by eight brothers and one sister. Funeral service was held December 27, 1976 at the Ratz-Bechtel Fun- eral Home with Rev. F.J. Roberts and Rev. G.F. Barthel officiating. Interment took place in Woodland Cemetery. Over half of the 24 apart- ments in the Maplewoods complex outside Zurich are occupied and an open house was held. . . There will be only one member on the Huron County Board of Education between Stanley and Bayfield in the future. . Krazy Days continues a Margaret Westlake of Zurich wins this week's draw. JULY 21 Zurich finds out its arena does not meet the building code standards set out by the pro- vincial government and it is going to take a lot of money to rectify the situation. .. . Zurich council decided to pass a by-law increasing sewer rates by $1.50 per month to riase the yearly rate to $66. The Zurich Business Association has decided to go ahead with the preparation of a plan to improve the core area of the village despite the fact no funding is available from the provincial government. Conservation leader Joe Clark and his wife Maureen tour the area. JULY 28 ... Debbie Bedard of Zurich is chosen Queen of the Fair over five other contestants - Ontario's medical health officers will meet at the legisla- ture buildings in Toronto to work out details for the vaccina- tion of Ontario residents against swine flu. . A severe wind storm in Exeter causes over $1,000,000 in damages. Nearly 100 people gave blood at the Zurich arena red cross clinic. AUGUST 4 The home of Elroy and Marlene Desjardine was severe- ly damaged by fire in the village. Huron County official ly unveils its new flag. - - Marilyn Ford of Dashwood was named Miss Friedsburg 1976. The canvass in Stanley Township for ball diamond improvements is a success. Stephen township is con- sidering the purchase of tanker trucks for two of their area fire departments. AUGUST 11 The Hensall sewers are almost completed as council passes a bylaw to govern the system to be used in collection of sewer rates by the village. A 10 person commission holds public hearings in the area to get public imput on the tax change proposals put forward by the government. .. - Mrs. Amelia Schroeder is still braiding rugs at the Blue - water Rest Home at the age of 94. AUGUST 18 . - Zurich's Dr, Wallace brings up plans for preparations in case of swine flu epidemic at council meeting. . . A customer in Zurich de- manding a meter check from now on will pay the cost of such a check in advance and the money will only be re- funded if the meter is found to be defective. - - . Stanley park by the lake is officially opened and includes a picnic area and bath house. - Hot dry weather is called for by the agriculture office in Clinton if the white bean and corn crops are to be any good - AUGUST 25 . . Zurich's annual bean festival is held. - - Bricking and paving of main street is completed and trees are planted by council members. Bean festival activities include pancake breakfast, bean dinner, midway for the kids, frog jumping contest, bean queen competition, crafts, horseshoe pitching and danc- ing. Ida McClinchey's store in Varna is sold to Bob Peck. SEPTEMBER 1 . . Over 10,000 people des- cended on Zurich to take part in the 11th annual Bean Festival. , Lynn Brooks was chosen the 1976 Bean Queen. Enrollment figures for the public schools in the area are down slightly from last year. . - . The first Zurich Ball Tourn- ament was a great success as a large turnout of fans were treated to a day of baseball with the Clinton team taking top honours. SEPTEMBER8 - . . Proposals announced by the provincial government to give increased financial aid to arenas needing repairs will be of value assistance to both Zurich and Hensall. A non-resident surcharge will be enforced at the Zurich arena from now on and anyone using the arena who is not a resident of Stanley Township, Zurich or Grand Bend will pay a $15 fee. Fire leveled a cottage in the Blue Haven subdivision in Stanley Township north of Drysdale. SEPTEMBER 15 . , - Zurich Lions name new exe- cutive with Vince Doyle as president. - . . Zurich council has decided to proceed with the additional renovations necessary for the arena to meet safety standards and Bob Redick has been 'appointed chairman of a fund raising committee. New rental rates for the Zurich ice surface are $20 per hour prime time and $18 per hour in non prime. - . - Peter McNaughton is honor- ed by over 170 people at the Pineridge Chalet for his activi- ties over the years in the Hensall community. SEPTEMBER 22 , .. The Huron County Board of Education reaches a settlement with the Secondary School Teachers Federation. . . Committee to raise funds (continued on page 11)
