Group visits 100 prisons a year
Making a profession out of
visiting prisons across
North America might not
seem to be much of a life but
to the members of the
Gospel Echoes Team it's a
life from which theyderive
much pleasure.
The Team which plays
music promoting Christiani-
ty received a warm
response from the number
of people who gathered at
Zurich Mennonite Church to
hear them, Friday evening.
The main purpose of the
team is to spread the word
of God to the inmates of
penal institutions in the
United States and Canada
with over 100 prisons visited
each year.
Nelson Coblentz said the
group which works out of
Goshen Indiana, has been
visiting prisons for two
years and spends nine
months out of the year
traversing the continent in a
converted highway bus.
Prior to their Zurich visit,
the Echoes played at
Penetanguishene and were
scheduled to visit Guelph
Reformatory on Sunday.
The team which visited
here Friday was reduced
somewhat in its numbers
due to a bus breakdown.
Dan and Ann Schrock,
Nelson Coblentz, Junior
Schroeder and Margaret
Beachy made the trip in a
van but the "Little Echoes",
the singing children of the
Team were forced to stay
behind.
Coblentz said the children
of the team have visited 60
out of the 100 prisons which
they've visited and "have
drawn the inmates closer to
the Lord."
In addition to providing
entertainment for the
prisoners, the Gospel
Echoes distribute New
Testiments and provide Bi-
ble study courses.
The Gospel Echoes team
is not sponsored by any one
church or denomination but
is supported solely by
donations of various
churches, organizations or
individuals who are in-
terested in furthering the
group's work. In addition,
the group sells its albums
and tapes.
The Team also showed
slides of their recent visit to
Florida prisons.
While there are several
members of the group on the
road, there are many other
