Many factors considered
for farm construction
By Ron Fleming
Spring is the time of year
when many farm building
projects are started. Since
many of these building
projects are built by the
farmer, it is important that
there be an understanding of
the types of loads which the
building is subjected to.
The main loads which we
have to consider in this area
are dead load, live loads due
to use and occupancy, wind
loads and snow loads. The
dead load refers to the
weight of the building
materials used in the
building. Pouring a concrete
floor in the second storey of

the barn would be an
example of dead load, and a
4 inch thick floor would have
a weight of approximately 50
Ib. per sq. ft.
Live loads take into con-
sideration the loads due to
animals housed in a building
as well as loads due to
tractors and other equip-
ment which might be on a
floor. These loads,are im-
portant when dsigning
slatted floors especially.
The most commonly
overlooked loading on a
building is the wind load. In
the Clinton area we can
expect a horizontal force of
up to 5.5 lb. per sq. ft. on a
vertical wall, and in a high -
walled building such as a
machinery shed, this may be
enough to collapse the
building without adequate
knee bracing. The wind
exerts a considerable force
on the roof of a building as
well and this force is in an
upward direction; therefore,
the roof has to be fastened
down well enough to
withstand this force.
One of the biggest con-
cerns when designing
buildings in Huron County is
the snow load. The amount of
snow which settles on a roof
is influenced to a small
degree by the slope of the
roof. A more important
consideration, however, is
whether the building is
exposed to the wind or
protected from the wind. An
exposed building is likely to
be blown fairly clear of
snow.
In the case of an addition
being built onto a two-storey
barn or a barn which is built
along a row of pine trees, the
wind does not have the same
opportunity to blow the snow
off the roof and greater loads
can be experienced.
In the Exeter area, the
snow load for roof design
purposes is about 25 lb. per
sq. ft. for an exposed roof
and about 331b. per sq. ft. for
a sheltered roof. These loads
have both doubled by the
time we get up to Clifford,
and in this area many roof
trusses are put at 32 in, on
centre for the extra strength
that is needed.
The numbers quoted here
may not mean much to the
farmer who is going to build,
but it is important that he at
least be aware of the dif-
ferent forces acting on his
building.
