Staff photo Time of year for drainage checking Ponded areas and stan- ding water often indicate problems in farm drainage systems, says Ross Irwin of the School of Engineering, Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph. "A tile -drainage system is an investment. To justify its cost, it should continue to operate efficiently. Keeping the system open and func- tioning properly is necessary for good land drainage." Professor Irwin says drainage lines of many older systems are spaced too far apart to operate efficiently. Wet patches between ex- isting lines is the symptom of this problem. "These areas of standing water can be eliminated if you upgrade the system by splitting. Adding these extra runs of tile between existing lines will make the system more efficient and will drain surface water faster." Ponded water over tile lines can also indicate broken or plugged tiles below. Farmers can eliminate the poorly -drained areas by digging down and making repairs. Holes or depressions over lines in such areas should be dug up and cleaned. Finally, the drainage out- lets 'should be examined. Outlets and screens should be in place and repaired. tiled field are indications "Farmers should make that mud and silt have wash- sure outlets are above the ed down into the drains.
