the history of his people
from their origin in Europe
four and a half centuries ago
to the present. He has a keen
interest in the Amish who
"represent a stricter form
of the same values we Men-
nonites subscribe to".
Recently Ruth produced a
52 -minute film, The Amish:
A People of Preservation;
which walked off with some
respected awards — a Cine
Golden Eagle, Honourable
Mention at the American
Film Festival and a Gold
Award at the Virgin Islands
Film Festival. Ruth,- a
gifted communicator, will
tell stories from his vast
repertoire at the Festival.
Aaron Zook, a Beachy
Amish artist from Pa., will
be present demonstrating
his unique carved painting
craft. His work focuses on
historical, cultural and
autobiographical topics,
showing an insider's view of
the history and way of life of
the Amish. Zook's work "A
Tradition of Love" will be
exhibited. It is a painting of
Anabaptist Dirk Willms
rescuing his pursuer from a
swollen river. (The rescued
man- then arrested Wilims
who was burnt at the stake
for his faith.)

entertained. Music will be a
major feature of the
Festival, ranging from un-
accompanied singing from
the Harmonia Sacra, a
hymnbook first published in
Virginia in 1832 to perfor-
mances by Menno Singers,
well known in the Kitchener
area for superior choralism,
Rockway Mennonite School
choirs, the Inter -Mennonite
Children's Choir and several
small singing groups.
Peter Goetz, well-known
Waterloo County artist, will
have a major display of Rus-
sian Paintings, portraying a
part of the world from which
many Waterloo County Men-
nonites originated. Also
featured will be "Heritage"
photography by David
Hunsberger of St. Jacobs.
His exhibit will include
some of his prints which
appear in the recently
published book, A People
Apart.
Roma Ruth, wife of Dr.
John L. Ruth, will also be
present with a display of
Fracture Art, an ornate
style of "fractured" or
broken lettering used in
family Bibles, documents,
wall hangings and mottos.
Of particular interest to
children will be a puppet
play, Leah, Leah, written by
Norma I. Rudy. The play
tells of events in the life of a
young Mennonite girl at the
beginning of the 19th cen-
NEM
tury. There will also be a
special area, a replica of a
log cabin. where story-
tellers will fascinate
children with tales of by-
gone days.
LATE IN THE SEASON — Although the hockey leagues around
the country are beginning to wind down their activities, spring
is an excellent time for some old fashioned road hockey.
