Zurich Citizens News, 1978-02-16, Page 48Page 16 February 16 Snow problems All the snow falling on Southwestern Ontario this winter has created a poten- tial electrical hazard. "Large snowfalls and high drifts have combined to reduce the clearances between electrical wires and the ground, so people can reach them more readily," says E.G. Bain- bridge, manager of Ontario Hydro's Western Region. Mr. Bainbridge warned that snowdrifts have piled along fences at transformer stations and under transmis- sion lines, making dangerous high voltage equipment accessible, es- pecially to adventurous children. "I've asked our seven area offices in Western Region to be on the 'lookout for these hazards and arrange, as soon as possible, to clear snow away from the transformer stations," he said. Hydro urged customers to avoid transmission lines and other installations and to call the nearest hydro or local utility office when one of these hazardous situations is noted. "Snowmobilers and skiers should also be very careful," added Mr. Bain- bridge. Helps people The Honourable Barney Danson announced today that the Government has ap- proved the continuation of the Katimavik youth program for one more year. This will allow for an in- crease to approximately 1200 young volunteers from 1000 enrolled during the first year. Mr. Danson said the program has already provid- ed the opportunity for young Canadians to work and assist in 30 communities across Canada. The Katimavik program assigns groups of young peo- ple to host communities where they help in major projects as well as provide volunteer services for the elderly, handicapped, or for those who are under- priviledged. The participants spend nine months in Katimavik with food and lodging \ pa's . ed. During this time they eye an allowance of one dolia:,dd.4ay and at the conclusion- "their service they receive .a .J,ionorarium of $1,000. Projects currently being undertaken include restora- tion of historic structures, building and refurnishing of recreation facilities, en- vironmental clean up pro- jects, park and -reforestation projects.
