Flyers down College and Arkona
(by Paul Charrette)
The Zurich Flyers posted two
victories this week in South
Huron Hockey League action,
edging the College 4-2 and
humiliating Arkona 14-3.
On Sunday afternoon the
Flyers skated to an easy 14-3
romp over the Arkona team.
Zurich broke the game wide
open in the first period with
eight unanswered goals as they
peppered the opposing goal -
tender with 30 shots.
It was 11-2 at the end of the
second and Zurich added three
more in the final period.
The line of Overholt, Desj-
ardine and Weido was a big
one as they scored seven of
the 14 goals with Weido and
Desjardine scoring two and
Glen Overholt recording his
fust hat -trick of the season.
Richard Fisher also scored two
goals (one short-handed) with
Pat Bedard, Rick Grenier,
Derek O'Brien, Kevin McKin-
non and Bob Farquhar getting
singles.
Derek O'Brien and Rick Gren-
ier were standouts on defence
as they broke up many plays.
Scoring for Arkona were Sid
Shuttleworth with two and
David Sheppard with one.
There were a total of 15 pen-
alties with Zurich drawing
eight of them. The shots on
goal were one-sided with Zur-
ich shooting a record 63 shots
on the goalie. Percy Bedard wa:
in between the posts for Zurich
and turned away twenty-four
shots.

team to come from a two -goal
deficit to defeat the College
team 4-2. The previously un-
defeated College bombarded
the Zurich goal with 20 shots
in the first period. They took
a one -goal lead at 7:10 with
Dennis Whiteside putting it
behind netminder Glen Gascho,
who played a spectacular game

Three way race
forHuronwarden
A possible three-way race
for Warden of Huron County is
predicted for January.
Two candidates have already
formally announced their inten-
tion to seek the post. They are
Reeve Anson McKinley, Stan-
ley Township and Reeve Allan
Campbell, McKillop Township.
Reeve Harold Lobb, Clinton,
is also expected to be a cand-
idate, but he was unavailable
at press time for comment.
Reeve McKinley said last
Wednesday he would seek elec-
tion as warden in 1975, exactly
60 years since his grandfather
was first elected to council in
Stanley Township. He said
Stanley has only had three
wardens since the early 1900's
the last one being Elsner Hayter
in 1972.
Reeve McKinley has been on
Stanley Township council for
12 years and this year is compl-
eting seven years on county
council. He is presently chair-
man of the Huronview Commit-
tee.
Reeve Allan Campbell, pres-
ently chairman of the Develop-
ment Committee of County
Council, has served 14 years
on McKillop Township Council.
He has been reeve for six years.
shots.
The second period was score-
less with Zurich showing a
slight edge in play.
At 1:45 of the final period
the College took a 2-0 lead
with Gerald Spruyt scoring.
Then at 6:12 the Flyers attack
began as Ron Rader, who also
played a tough checking game,
blinked the red light with help
from Kevin McKinnon. Mc-
Kinnon himself scored his first
of two to tie up the game at
14 minutes, with help from
Jim Ramer and Dick Bedard,
who played a rugged game
throughout slowing down the
speedy College team.
McKinnon's second goal
carne on a breakaway at 17.08
as he put it behind the sprawl-
ing goaltender. Exactly one
minute later Glen Overholt
stole the puck and he also out-
manouevered the goaltender
on a breakaway giving Zurich
the insurance goal.
Coach Meaner, who seemed
to give life to his team when
he was on the ice, praised the
play of his defensive unit cons-
isting of Bedard, O'Brien,
Grenier and Ramer.
