Harvest has still been prog-
ressing rather slowly this past
week. The frequent showers
and poor drying days kept harv-
est at a near standstill.
New police headquarters for
Huron County are now in full
operation. Built just a few mile
south of Goderich, the new off-
ices serve the entire county.
The OPP anti -gambling squac
and the OPP detachment at
Grand Bend carried out swift
raids Mast Thursday night at a
number of business establish-
ments in Grand Bend.
Thieves who "dropped in"
unexpectedly at the Hess Jew-
ellery store in Hensall last
week apparently scared them-
selves and fled empty handed.
Agri -nates
Union Carbide went on strike
and it costs the farmer money.
That may sound strange at first
glance. If the grain handlers
strike or the meat packers it
is obvious that this will have
a depressing effect on those
commodities.
Well, Union Carbide makes
most of the casings for sausage
and when they went on strike
the packers curtailed their pur-
chases of sows with a resulting
drop in prices. When facilities
at the packer are sitting idle
it costs him money, so he
passes this loss to the consumer
in the form of a small increase
on all his product.
So a seemingly unrelated
strike in industry makes for a
loss to the farmer and a higher
price to the consumer.
I saw a picture recently of a
loin of hog of eight years ago
and one of this year. The
difference is truly amazing.
While the old loin was almost
half fat, the new one had only
a very small rim of this. It
shows clearly what great imp-
rovement has been made in
the last few years to improve
the quality of pork. The Can-
adian hog has been truly re-
designed.
Here is a quote from the
"National Hog Farmer" an
American magazine. Many of
those who are making the most
noise about the middleman and.
about food prices could well
paraphrase that oft quoted
comment of Pogo's about poll-
ution. "We have the middle-
man and he is us."
That ghostly middleman is
the packinghouse worker. He's
the retail store employee. He's
the truckdriver, the waitress,
the baker, the frozen pie mak-
er. Labour makes up nearly
half, 48'Jo of the marketing
charges on food.
Hourly labor costs of the
food marketing firms increased
700 since 1962. Part of that
increase was reduced by increas.
ed output per man hour, reduc-
