This statement added two other nationalities to his list. Our conversation was inter- rupted by the noise of a small freight train corning from the Grecian side of the border. The station master, who liked no nationality, not even the Greeks, then put up a great arg- ument with the train crew to get them to take me across in the engine to the Greek border post so that I would not have to wait the entire day in that tiny village. Not exactly legal proc- edure, but then he really put himself out to get me across. The Greek train crew was no less kind. As I rode off in the engine and waved good-bye to the station master, it struck me as highly ironic that, in a world where hate was so predominant, people could still be as kind to me as anywhere else. What a funny world we live in!
