PUMP HOUSE NQ.I
OLD FIRE HALL DEMOLISHED - One of the older buildings in the Village of Zurich has fallen
prey to progress, as the original fire hall has been torn down. The building was purchased by
Gerald Gingerich, and all that remains are two outside walls as workmen continue to clear away
the debris. The building also housed the pressure tank for the Zurich Water System, and since
this is no longer used the council decided to abandon the location. Zurich's original well is seen
at the right of the photo, and it is no longer in use either.
Wheat Board hope to
clear out 1973 crop
The Ontario Wheat Producers'
Marketing Board's present stocks
of 1973 crop wheat will all be
sold by the end of September.
The announcement was made
by board chairman Fergus
Young, R.R,1, Ennisinore,
following a meeting of the boars
of directors held at Cambridge.
Mr. Young said the board's
marketing manager Otis Mc-
Gregor, reported sales have
been closed in recent days tot-
alling well over three million
bushels for deliveries spread
over a two to three month per-
iod.
The board chairman pointed
out that while several sales
are involved, the total volume
will clean out about three mill-
ion bushels of board owned
1973 crop wheat.
However, he emphasized
that delivery will not be compl-
eted until the end of Septemb-
er and payment to the board
will not be completed until
that time.
In addition to the 1973 crop
wheat, the board sales also
include some new crop (1974)
wheat and the majority of the
sales are for export movement.
Mr. Young said it is hoped
the board as the result of the
recent sales will be in a position
to issue a statement in the
next week or two concerning
payments yet to be made to
producers for 1973 crop wheat.
He said the board of directors
are also anxious to find out
when the 1973 crop federal
consumer subsidy wheat pay-
ment can be made to producers.
Mr. Young pointed out that
the federal government had
previously agreed to turn the
money over to the board for
distribution to producers but
that the board has riot yet rec-
eived the money.
The board chairman said the
Minister of Agriculture, the
Hon. Eugene F. Whelan, will
be contacted as soon as possible
to determine when the pay-
ment can be expected.
Meanwhile, harvest of new
crop wheat has started in Essex
County with early reports of
good quality and good yield.
Continuing under the new .
marketing and pricing system
established last year which
involves pooling of the crop,
producers receive an initial
payment.
This year, the initial pay-
ment price to producers is
$2.01 per bushel, less 1¢ per
bushel licence fee. Last year,
the initial payment was $1.51.

OPP need
recruits
(continued from page 1)
officers from; our native popul-
ation. Because of these factors,
our recruiting program is
paying particular attention to
encouraging young leen and
women of diverse backgrounds
to join us. We hope to be able
to have officers stationed
throughout the province who
speak both the primary and sec-
ondary languages of that area.
We are very pleased with the
successful introduction of wom-
en into the ranks of the OPP,
and wish to have more of them
join the Force. It is our belief
that a great many women are
particularly well suited to
police work. Our female offic-
ers are required to perform all
law enforcement duties.
