YEARLY CONTROLS
Many farmers .in southwest-
ern Ontario have found over the
last few years that corn root -
worm controls do not need to be
applied year after year on cont-
inuous corn.
However, if you did use a
chemical on corn rootworm last
season --such as chlordane --
and it gave poor control, either
the chemical or the application
method used must be questioned,
says Alvin Brooks, Soils and
Crops specialist with the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food.
Corn rootworm chemicals
should be applied in a 4 to 6
inch band over the corn row
ahead of the presswheel.
Triangular-shaped spreaders
can be purchased for this purp-
ose. The chemical can be
deflected into the 4 to 6 inch
band with a simple deflector
made from sheet metal.
Crop rotation is the easiest
and most highly recommended
method of control, since corn
rootworms feed only on corn
roots.
