County council asks
for study on pollee
(by Shirley J. Keller)
The executive committee of
Huron County Council has been
charged with the responsibility
to look into a request from
Huron County's Police Commis-
sions to ask the Solicitor
General to conduct a study on
policing needs in Huron County.
Representatives of Huron's
Police Commissions attended
last Friday's meeting of Huron
County Council and suggested
the request to the Solicitor Gen-
eral should include the provision
that any study undertaken by
that office would examine "all

Zurich Women's Institute
met on Monday evening with
21 members and seven visitors
present.
Mrs. Ward Neeb was chair -
lady for an interesting program.
Mrs. Robert Gregson, Exeter,
demonstrated cake decorating
and also iced several cakes for
party occasions, which were
later enjoyed for lunch.
Miss Sylvia Neeb played
several piano numbers. The
roll call was answered by the
members giving the name of
the president when they joined
the Women's Institute.
As this was the last greeting
until the fall season, plans were
made for summer events.
It was decided to make a
quilt block for the Women's
Institute craft display at Ontario
Science Centre in Toronto.

the possible alternatives with
regards to policing."
The action stems from a
report by the Task Force on
Policing in Ontario which has
suggested that all municipalit-
ies under 15, 000 persons would
be policed by the Ontario Prov-
incial Police with all other
forces to be disbanded.
If this was made legislation,
it would mean that the police
forces in Huron's five towns
would be dissolved.
Some discussion centred
around the fact that rural areas
presently now pay nothing extra
by way of municipal taxes for
police protection since they
are patrolled by the OPP. In
the five towns, however, res-
idents there pay heavily for
their town police forces.

It was pointed out at the
meeting that in the future, it
appears that the rural areas will
also be paying through their
municipal'taxes for police prot-
ection by the OPP. That being
the case, it was felt by some
that a Huron County Police Force
41,
offs -
t
might be the most economical
method of policing.
A brief containing 20 public
advantages to be gained through
a county police force was on the
desk of each councillor for study
It promised faster service to the
public in Huron County; central
dispatching; improved salaries
and benefits for police officers;
and improved policing in many
other ways.
The presentation noted the
OPP would still patrol the high-
ways and be a part of justice in
Huron.
