TODAY'S CHILD
BY HELEN ALLEN
The pose is indicative of Freddy's personality for he's a quiet
lad, inclined to daydream. Handsome Freddy is five, Anglo-
Saxon in descent. He is slightly built and small -boned with
beautiful dark eyes, brown hair and fair skin. He is in good
health except for being subject to colds.
Freddy would rather play by himself than with other children
but enjoys adult company. He likes water, 'stars, colors and
machinery — especially cranes and bulldozers. Though often
inattentive in kindergarten, he is observant about such things as
the color of eyes, hair, clothes and traffic lights.
Freddy's teacher says he is apparently average in intelligence
but doesn't seem interested in what is going on in school. He has
tremendous curiosity outside school and he likes books,
especially if somebody will read him a story. He enjoys
drawing, painting and coloring.
Even outdoors, Freddy is quite happy with his own company.
This engaging boy will be a fine son for parents with much
understanding who can love him without expecting instant love
in return.
To inquire about adopting Freddy, please write to Today's
Child, Ministry of Community and Social Services, Box 888,
Station K, Toronto M4P 2112. For general adoption information,
please contact your local Children's Aid Society.

BEEF MANAGEMENT
A bred heifer should continue
to gain about 1 pound daily up
to calving so that she will weigl-
over 900 pounds at calving time
"They should not be overfed to
the point of fattening, since
overly fat heifers have higher
calf losses at birth. It may be
necessary to restrict energy

intake of fat heifers prior to
calving, " Macartney says,
A first -calf heifer takes
longer to recycle or show heat
after calving. The beef spec-
ialist says that heifers should be
bred 2 to 3 weeks earlier than
the math herd, This way, they
will calve earlier in the season
and will cycle normally by the
time the main herd is bred the
next year.
