She advocated a two -price system, high for export and low for Canadians as a measure of restricting the effects of export demand to protect Canadian consumers from skyrocketing world prices. Philip Durand, of Zurich, bean board chairman, said the finances trade missions in many parts of the world ro market white beans. Ile said producers have never been subsidized by rhe government for the form of marketing system. Mr. Durand added he was not aware of any other comm- odity organization subsidizing consumers, including auto- mobile manufacturers, but added some farmers do receive subsidies to produce their prod- uct. "It would be interesting to me to see the reaction of a prop' osal to Mrs. Plumptre asking the federal government to curt- ail her committee's spending which I believe would be an excellent way to subsidize the consumers of Canada, " added Mr. Durand. Mrs. Plumptre had noted that white beans sold for $11 per hundred weight in 1972 but soar- ed to more than $40 a hundred weight last year due to a world shortage of protein, bringing on bids from foreign buyers for Canadian supplies. "The more I look at the fact- ors influencing the international food market, the more I am personally tending toward the view that for Canadians to cont- inue to enjoy the privilege of what in world terms, are relat- ively low food prices, it may be necessary to consider tatting steps to insulate some domest- ic markets from international demand forces, " she said. While a two -price system creates political and economic problems domestically and with Canada's trading partners, her board is now studying the idea and may have more to say about it in due course, she said. been appointed to head the 1974 season ticket drive which will open on May 18.
