Shipka takes lead in
hockey playoff series
Corning through with a
thrilling 5-4 overtime victory
on Tuesday night in the fifth
game of their best -of -seven
series in South Huron Hockey
playoffs, the Shipka Colonials
took a 3-2 lead and could end
the series in the sixth game
Friday night..
Last ,Friday night the Zurich
crew won the third game of
the series' 7-4, to take a 2-1
lead in games, but nn Sunday
afternoon the Shipka gang
came right back to upend the
locals 7-2 and tie everything
up at two games each. If the
series should go seven games
the final will be played in the
local arena on Sunday afternooi
Jim Guenther was the big
difference in the two teams
Tuesday night as he banged in
three goals for the winners, two
of them within 15 seconds of
each other in the second period,
Pat Bedard got Zurich on the
scoreboard early in the first
period when he slapped in a
pass from Ron Desjardine to
give the locals a 1-0 lead.
With only seven seconds to play
in the opening stanza, Bill
Hoffman flashed the red light
for Shipka to tie the score at
1-1.
The second period was only
about six seconds old when
Richard Schilbe shot the Flyers
into a 2-1 lead, when he scored
unassisted. Four minutes later
Bob Merrier found the range for
Zurich to give them a 3-1
lead, which looked good for a
while until Guenther took over
and banged in two goals 15
seconds apart, tying the score
at 3-3.
Guenther gave Shipka a 4-3
lead eraly in the third period,
and the margin looked good
until the closing minutes of
regulation time. With less than
a minute and a half to play and
Zurich pressing hard for the
equalizer, Ron Corriveau bang-
ed in a pass from Pat Bedard to
tie the score at 4-4 and force
an overtime session.
The overtime was only a
little over a minute old when
Dennis Morrissey scored what
proved to be the winning goal
for Shipka. His team was short-
handed at the time.
An outstanding performance
by Percy Bedard in the Zurich
net, especially in the overtime
session, presented the Colonials
from scoring on many occasions
when it appeared all they had
to do was shoot the puck in the
net. Bedard has been coming
up with sensational goal -tend-
ing all through the series
Seven minor penalties and one
misconduct were handed out to
the Shipka crew, while Zurich
were called for two minors.
ZURICH '7 -SHIPKA 4 '
Coming up with their best
performance of the season last
Friday night, the Flyers coasted
to an easy 7-4 victory in the
third game of the series. They
took a 2-1 lead in the first per-
iod, and then increased it to
6-3 by the end of the second.
Both teams scored once in the
third.
Ron Desjaidine opened the
scoring for Zurich in the first
stanza, only to have Jack
5tanlake come right back for
Shipka before the midway mark
Before the session ended Rich-
ard Schilbe banged in a pass
from Kevin McKinnon to give
the locals their 2-1 lead.
The second period was al-
most half way over before Des -
Jardine came through with his
second big goal of the game,
and then in the next two min-
utes Pat Bedard found the range
for the locals and Schilbe came
up with his second goal of the
game, to give the locals a 5-1
lead. At the 13.35 mark Larry
Laye scored for Shipka only to
have Bob Merner come right
back with another for Zurich.
Jim Guenther ended the scoring
in the second session when he
scored for Shipka with less than
a minute remaining.
Kevin McKinnon combined
with Merrier. early in the third
to give the Flyers a 7-3 lead,
and then Dennis Morrissey scor-
ed the final marker of the game
at the midway mark.
Outstanding goal -tending
by Percy Bedard in the Zurich
nets gave the locals the spirit
they needed to lift them to the
victory. Bedard even turned
aside a penalty shot without any
trouble in registering the 7-4
win.
SHIPKA 7 - ZURICH 2
Zurich came up with their
poorest showing of the series
on Sunday afternoon when they
came out on the short end of a
7-2 score in the fourth game
of the series. Even though they
led 1-0 at the end of the first
period, they quickly fell behind
for the rest of the game as
Shipka came through with three
goals in the second and added
four more in the third. Zurich
came up with their second goal
of the game in the third period.
Kevin McKinnon opened the
scoring at the 2.09 mark of the
first period when he slapped in
a pass from Richard Schilbe and
Rick Grenier. Both teams work-
ed hard for the balance of the
session, but neither managed to
find the range.
The second period was only
three minutes old when Steve
Kadelecik tied the score at 1-1,
and then two minutes later
John Becker shot Shipka into a
2-1 lead. Before the period.
ended Shane Burley gave the
Bears a 3-1 lead, and from that
point on theynever looked
back.
By the midway point of the
third period Dan Dalton and
Gord Vincent had both scored
for Shipka to give them a

game Dennis Morrissey banged
in another to give the visitors
their 7-2 margin.
