Our president, Lloyd Willert, welcomed the guests after a very delicious dinner was serv- ed. Lloyd also asked our District Directors, Lorne Luther, of Lucknow, to chair the meeting. The minutes of the last an- trualmeeting were read and also the treasurer's report for the past year. Among the group, Jack Rid- dell, M.P, for Huron, was present. Mr. Riddell was asked to speak. He gave a few well chosen words and expressed his appreciation for being asked to address the group. The two participants of last year's youth exchange, Miss Diane Klopp and John Vander- Burgt, both told of their trip out west and how they enjoyed the exchange immensely. Diane said she first landed in Edmonton then was taken by bus to the Peave River Area, a geographical area that is sit- uated above the 55 deg. North latitude line. This is a new area just opening up their land sim- ilar to the pioneers that opened by Ontario a few hundred years ago, with most of the settlers being only second generation farmers. Staying at a spacious brand new home, as most all had in this new area, just outside the City of Grande Praire which is only a couple of hours away from the British Columbia bord- er. They have very black soil, don't use much fertilizer on their vast farms. John thanked the NFU for giving him the opportunity to go out West on this exchange, as it was the first time he ever set foot on a train, for the two and one half day tr ip, leaving London to Toronto, through Northern Ontario, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Ed- monton. His first sight of the west was shocking, as he had the impression like we always hear, it is flat and covered with Discuss makeup (by Cindy O'Brien) On Monday, March 25, the Zurich III and IV 4-1-1 clubs met in the Zurich Public School to view a film "The Changing Film" sponsored by the Noxzema Company. The company sent along powder, make-up and lipstick samples to be handed out. After the film, Zurich III then went back to Mrs. Oke's for our meeting. We discussed the different types of skin. Our president tharb-el both youth for their interesting rev- iew of their trip also reminded them they could attend a semin- ar and rally for a youth on April 19 to 21, at the Avion Hotel in Toronto. Guest speaker for the even- ing was Gordon MacDonald, a Farm Safety Consultant, who said the Farm Safety Associat- ion was formed in January, 1973, and they also have nine safety associations and they are spon- sored by the Workmen's Compen sation Board. He works in Huron County and stressed the need of farmers to belong to Compensation as approximately only one-third of the farmers do belong. They paid out three and one-half million dollars in claims last year and many of these claims were from carelessness such as no shields on power take off, children who have never driven a tractor before and many other careless .accidents. Secretary for the evening was Mrs. Maxine Miller who listed election results as foll- ows; president, Lloyd Willert, R. R,1, Dashwood; vice-presi- dent, Gerald Regier, R. All you do is accumulate fifteen demerit points and lose your licence for thirty days, Do it again and lose your licence for six months. In this province, it definitely pays a driver to score a big fat zero. Ontario's demerit point system is designed to convince the poor driver to drive properly. Drivers who do not improve are then taken from the road because they're a menace to pedestrians and to other drivers, But the system is not at all unjust. It's aimed at telling the driver where he's gone wrong and giving him plenty of time to cor- rect his faults. For instance. When you've accumulated six points, you'll be notified and urged to improve your driving. When you've got nine, you'll prob- ably be asked to attend a private interview and re -do your driving test. At fifteen points, you'll lose your licence for thirty days and drop back to seven points. Get fifteen again and you won't drive for six months, However, your record won't be point h le lose r's licence. indelibly marked. If you drive for two years without a traffic con- viction your points are erased and your slate is clean.
