Zurich Shipka both win;
Series resumes Friday night
Two games played - and each
team has one victory. This
might well be the way the best-
of- seven series between Shipka
Bears and Zurich Flyers in
South Huron Hockey League
finals will go, as the two arch -
rivals battle for the league
championship.
Last Friday night in the first
game of the series, the Flyers
came out on top with a 6-5
victory, and then on Sunday
afternoon the results were rev-
ersed as the Shipka crew regis-
tered a 6-3 win. Third and
fourth games of the series will
be played in the Zurich Arena
this Friday night and Sunday
afternoon.
In the first game of the ser-
ies the Zurich crew took an
early 3-0 lead in the first per-
iod Pat Bedard, Bob Merrier
and Paul Corriveau all found
the range before the 11 -minute
mark. With five minutes left
to play in the opening session
Bill Hoffman tallied for the
Bears to make the score 3-1.
At the five-minute mark of
the second period Kevin Me -
Kinnon registered for the locals
and five minutes later Ron Cor-
riveau made the score 5-1 for
Zurich. At 17.10 Dennis Morr-
issey found the range for the
Shipka crew, only to have
Rich Schilbe come right back
with another marker for Zurich.
Stan Lovie scored for the Bears
with only a minute left in the
period, to hold the score at 6-3.
Shipka came out strong in the
third session and the period
was only two minutes old when
Jim Guenther banged one in for
the Bears to make the score
6-4. Still pressing hard with
only seven minutes left in the
game, Morrissey scored his sec-
ond goal of the game to keep
the Shipka crew right in the
thick of the battle. Stellar
netminding on the part of Percy
Bedard kept the Bears off the
scoresheet for the balance of the
game, and preserved the 6-5
win for the locals.
A total of seven minors and
one major were called against
Shipka, while Zurich picked up
only three minor penalties.
In the second game of the
Junior Farmers to attend conference

Part of the Conference prog-

Walton as Provincial Director
for Huron County and Tom
Melody, Dublin as his Alternate,

series on Sunday afternoon
Shipka scored four big goals
within 12 minutes in the second
period, and then coasted on to
a 5-3 victory.
Bob Merner scored the first
goal of the game at 4.40 of the
opening period to give Zurich
a short-lived lead. Less than
two minutes later Jim Guenther
found the range for the Bears,
while Larry Laye scored three in
a row to give them a 4-1 lead
before the first period ended. .
The only goal of the second
period was scored by Richard
Schilbe at the 1.02 mark, and
Zurich Atoms
in tournament
(by Danny Turkheim)
The Zurich Atoms particip-
ated in the Arthur Atom Tourn-
ament last weekend when they
competed for the "B" champ-
ionship. They played a total
of three games winning two and
losing the third to Palmerston.
Their first game was played
Saturday morning when they
swamped Belmore 14-3. Top
scorers of the game were Rob-
ert Willert and Kris Bedard each
scoring four goals while Jim
Willert and Brian Horner each
scored hat tricks.
ZURICH 3 - CAYUGA 0
The Atoms played again
Saturday afternoon when they
met Cayuga in a 3-0 victory.
Zurich's marksmen were Kris
Bedard, Jim Willert and David
Smith. The Zurich goaltender
also deserves credit for an out-
standing performance.
PALMERSTON 4 - ZURICH 3
The Atoms returned to the
Tourney Sunday afternoon only
to be eliminated by Palmerston
in a 4-3 decision.
Kris Bedard, Jim and Robert
Willert were the scorers for
the Zurich squad while the Pal-
merston scorers were unknown.
Palmerston then went on to
play St. George where they were
defeated 4-3 in a second over-
time period.
ZURICH 5 - PARKHILL 1
The Atoms played an exhib-
ition game against Parkhill last
Wednesday night and came up
with a 5-1 victory.
Robert Willert and Kris Bed-
ard each scored twice with
Brian Horner scoring the fifth
and final goal.

then the two teams went
through over 32 minutes of
action with neither team man-
aging to find the range.
Finally at 13.35 of the third
period John Becker scored for
Shipka to give them a 5-2 lead,
With just a little over a minute
left to play in the game a
penalty shot was called against
Shipka, and Schilbe made no
mistake as he skated in on Joe
Arnold to beat him with the
third goal for the Flyers. The
penalty shot was awarded when
a Shipka defenceman grabbed
the puck in his own goal crease,
which automatically allows the
penalty shot.
Eight minor penalties were
handed out to Shipka, and four
to the Zurich crew.
Crowds at both games have
been very good, and with the
closeness of play and rivalry
that exists,the arena will be
jammed full for the balance of
the series.
