The president, Mrs. Bill Dowson, opened the meet- ing with a poem which was foll- owed by the singing of hymn "Blesses be the Tie that Binds." Offering was taken up Mrs. Zurich Institute entertain at Rest Home Zurich Women's Institute met Tuesday evening, February 5, at the Blue Water Rest Home. An interesting program, arrang- ed by Mrs. Lawrence Regier and Mrs. Morris Vermunt, was presented to the residents for their February birthday party. About thirty of the residents enjoyed several numbers by Clare Masse and Harvey Smith, and also by Clare Masse and his daughter, Lori. Mary Anne Vermunt, Elaine Ducharme and Gary Ducharme sang and played their guitars. Harvey Smith and his daught- er Penny, dressed as a farmer and his daughter, contributed several numbers also. Nine residents who are cele- brating birthdays in February were presented with gifts, after which lunch was served. In the business meeting it was decided to hold a quilting bee on March 4, with supper to be served. A committee, with Mrs. T. Meyers as convener, was appointed to arrange for the 60th anniversary, which the W, I, are celebrating this year. Mrs. Len Prang was appointed as delegate to the W.I. Conf- erence at Waterloo University, on April 30, May 1 and 2. EUCHRE PARTY Eleven tables played euchre Monday night in the Hay Town- ship Hall. Winners were; ladies high, Mrs. Herb Klopp; ladies low, Mrs. L. Prang; Men's high, Peter Deichert; men's low, Lorne Klopp; lone hands, Mrs. O. Moore; The couple with the nearest wedding anniv- ersary, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gascho. Another euchre will be held on February 25. (by Mrs. Ivan McClymont) Gordon Johnston, and dedicated by Mrs. Ivan McClymont. Group III was in charge of the devotions and the topic was "Strengthening of the Inner Life. Mrs. John Ostrom, Mrs. Ralph Stephenson and Mrs. Ivan McClymont gave readings and Mrs. Charles Reid read the scrip- ture. Mrs. Bill Dowson then presid- ed for the business meeting. The roll call was answered and the secretary's report was read by Mrs. Harvey Hayter and the treasurer's report by Mrs. Bob Webster. Mrs. Ida McClinchey read a thank you note from Mrs. John McAsh. There were 28 calls made to the sick and shut-ins during January. It was decided to donate $20 to the United Church Camp Menesetung in Goderich. A conference is being held in Mitchell on March 6 with Mrs. Audrey McKim as one of the guest speakers. The Pancake Supper was voted to take place again this year on Tuesday, February 26, with proceeds going to the Explorers. Mrs. Jane Davidson of Brucefield has consented to come and give everyone in the area an insight into her visit in India. The date set is Tuesday, March 12. Mrs. Ralph Stephenson was presented with a life member- ship pin of the UCW and a vase in appreciation for her service as president of the local groups for the past two years. A Dutch Auction of candies, cookies, cakes, and squares was held with Mrs. Bev Hill in charge. Mrs. Bill Dowson closed the meeting with prayer. Lunch followed, provided by Mrs. George Wilson , Nits. Ron Tay- lor, and Mrs, Grant Webster. The Orange Lodge held another card party last Friday night and those winning prizes were; ladies high, Mrs. Aaron Fisher; ladies low, Mrs. George Yeats; men's high, Bob Taylor, men's low, Bill Stephenson. The Varna Explorers made a draw on a quilt on which they were selling tickets. Mrs. Grace White, of Clinton won the quilt. Mr. William Taylor and Mr. Gordon Johnston were inducted as elders in Varna United Church a couple of weeks ago. At the February meeting of LOL 1035, the Biddulph District officers were present and conf- erred the Royal Blue Degree, on Dave Roy and Don Taylor of the local lodge. The rink committee reported increased use of the skating rink this winter. The next bowl- ing party is set for Friday, March 1. 0 Lutheran Women hold workathon One of the most successful Workathons was held Tuesday by the Lutheran Church Women, It is an annual event with the finished projects going to diff- erent relief organizations and the Children's Aid. The ladies of Redeemer Luth- eran Church, London and the Brodhagen Lutheran Church were guests for the day. A total of 22 quilts were made, plus other craft projects. A pot luck lunch and dinner was served by the Zurich ladies. A short devotional service and a business meeting were held in the church following the evening meal. Mrs. Herb Klopp, Mrs. Erl Flaxbard, Mrs. Herb Keller and Mrs. O. Moore were in charge of the Workathon.
