The January meeting of the United Church Women was held in the basement of the church on Thursday evening of last week with 21 members and one visitor present. Mrs. William Dawson opened the meeting by reading a poem "A recipe for New Year's Eve." Devotions were led by group two and opened by singing a hymn and followed by a script- ure read by Mrs. Grant Webster. Mrs. George Wilson gave a med- itation on "Hopes for the New Year," and ended with a poem "Happy New Year." Mrs. Charles Kalbfleisch led in prayer. The offering was re- ceived by Mrs. M. Morrison and dedicated by Mrs. Roy Elliott. Mrs. William Dowson presid- ed over the business period. The secretary read the report of the last meeting and the executive meeting. Mrs. Ralph Stephenson was nominated to the Board of Stewards. The treasurer's report was read by Mrs. Bob Webster. The roll call was answered by payment of membership fees. There were 51 calls made to sick and shut-ins. Thank -you notes were read by Mrs. Ida McClinchey. It was decided that the UCW would sponsor a bowling party for the choir members. Mrs. William Dowson introd- uced Mrs. Paul Morrison, who gave an account of a collection of antique dishes, pictures and dolls entitled "Treasure Trove" that she made for a 4-H club project. Some members brought some of their treasures and a discussion followed. The meeting was closed by repeating the Lord's prayer. Lunch was served by hostess Mrs. Bob Webster, Mrs. Mervyn Hayter and Mrs. Louis Taylor. The local skating rink was opened last week and is being enjoyed by the young skaters. The Varna Orange Lodge held their first card party of the seas- on last Friday evening with 19 tables in play. Winners were ladies high, Mrs. William Pep- per; ladies low, Mrs. Bill Ches- sell; Men's high, Mervyn John- ston, men's low, Craig Taylor; draw prizes, Mrs. Dave Roy, Aaron Fisher, and Mrs. Barry ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Taylor. (intended for last week) The annual meeting of LOL 1035 was held last Wednesday evening. It was preceded by a bountious supper served at Hully Gully. After supper the memb- ers returned to the Orange Hall. During the session two cand- idates were initiated. The elec- tion of officers are as follows: W.M. Grant Webster; D.M. Ronald Taylor; Chaplain, Louis Taylor; Rec. Secretary, Barry Taylor; Treasurer, Fred McCly- mont; Marshall, Eric Chuter; First Lect., Robert Webster; second Lect., Ivan McClymont. first corn., Ralph Stephenson. The officers were installed by County Master Alex Hamil- ton of Grand Bend. During the Lodge session, the Marshall led three members in front of the altar, Watson Webster, Wilfred Chuter and Fred Mc- Clymont, and they were present- ed with a 50 -year long standing service certificate and a gold pin. All three are past Masters of the Lodge. Word was received of the death of Mr. Clarence Keyes, of Santa Monica, California. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Keyes, formerly of Varna.
