Lucan, $9065 yearly. s resolution Council received a green paper from Honorable George Kerr, Provincial Secretary for Justice, on "Sunday as a Com- mon Day of Rest and Uniform Store Hours." Mr. Kerr intends to tour the Province and conduct meetings to hear views, wel- come recommendations and out- line alternatives on the unifor- mity for retail store hours. They also received an invitation Farm fora rate up pensation Farming has the third-highest accident frequency of all other occupations, and with the large number of farm workers injured each year, compensation pay- ments have been increasing steadily. As a result, the rates for farm employers reporting to the Workmen's Compensation Board were raised on January 1 of this year. Don Brown of the Farm Safety Association (FSA) points out that rate increases and pay claims are the responsibility of Workmen's Compensation Board not FSA. "The policy of the FSA, being involved in an occupational accident prevention program, is to help the farmer in any way we can. An explanation for the rate increases is one of the questions constantly being asked'. In the past, WCB rates for farm employers were lower than recommended by provincial auditors. With the increasing cost of payments, the deficit for these rates has been increas- ing steadily over the last three years. In order to bring the def- icit back to normal, WCB is adopting the recommendations of its auditors, The $1.50 rate will be increased to $1.95; and the $3.35 rate to $4. Brown continues that "the Farm Safety Association is a purely consultative organizat- ion to help Ontario farmers reduce their accident frequen- cies. Already many farmers are beginning to discover that the number of accidents is well above average; they have to understand that, without accid- ent prevention and safety educ- ation, they will be forced to pay even higher assessments."
