Two new curriculum guide-
lines keyed to the needs of
students in today's society were
announced by Education Min-
ister Thomas Wells last week.
They are Fancily Studies and
and Environmental Science,
Irlr, Wells said that the Fam-
ily Studies guideline, designed
for students in grades '7 to 1t,
emphasizes the role of the fam-
ily in society. Courses develop-
ed from the guideline will,
Mr. Wells said, help students
to understand and appreciate
many of the factors that cont-
ribute to the quality of living.
The guideline centres on five
major areas of study; child
development, the management
of family resources, housing,
food and nutrition and clothing.
Mr. Wells said that the Env-
ironmental Science guideline
represents a "sharpened emphas-
is on environmental studies in
the schools,"
"The natural components of
our environment, including
air, water, soil, energy, plant
life, forests and wildlife receive
major emphasis in the guide-
line. Students will be shown hots
the preservation and balance of
these resources demands care-
ful decisions with regard to the
development of man -created
encroachments like highways
and cities."
"Control over pollution of
all aspects of our environment
is obviously a matter of the
highest priority for all levels of
government and for our people.
In addition to encouraging
more schools to develop specif-
ic courses in environmental
science, we are also encourag-
ing teachers to work the topic
into many other courses such as
biology, chemistry and geog-
raphy, " Mr. Wells said.
