meeting last week.

Allan Walker, area directors.
Gordon 11111, president of the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture
said at the annual that some
companies are warning dealers
of a shortage of fertilizer by
spring.
Ile told the meeting that the
scarcity will be caused mainly
by a shortage of ingredients.
"We are going to need increas•
ed amounts of money under the
Farre Improvements Act to stay
in business, " with higher land
prices, machinery costs and high
er )rices for most farm inputs,
Mr. 11111 also said.
Guest speaker at the meeting
was Federal Agriculture Minist-
er Eugene Whelan who said that
Japan "is interested" in signing
a food marketing contract with
Canada containing a production
cost escalation clause.
The clause would guarantee
Canadian producers prices that
would rise to keep pace with
increases in production costs.
Ile said he met with the Jap-
anese agriculture minister in
Ottawa Thursday and that anoth-
er meeting is scheduled today.
Mr. Whelan said no agree-
ment would be made without
consulting the provinces,
"Japan wasn't interested two
years ago, but they seem to be
now, " he said.
The contract would presum-
ably involve most foodstuffs
produced in Canada, especially
pork, of which Japan is a major
consenter.
