Mr. Durand said the first price

market was $17 to $18 per hund-
redweight, while the bootlegger:
were pulling down $16 to $22.
But, now with a strengthening
market, the bean board is sell-
ing beans for $37 to $38 per
hundredweight.
"Many producers felt $16 to
$22 was an excellent price and
didn't foresee a market this
strong, " Mr. Durand said.

Varna man killed
J.W. Elgin Porter, of Varna
was killed on Sunday, Septemb-
er 30, after a car accident at
Highway 96 and Huron County
Road 10, about 10 miles east
of Wingham. He was 65.
Mr. Porter was bron on
April 26, 1908 in Goderich
Township a son of the late
Richard and Hannah Porter. He
attended school in Goderich
and Goderich Township. He
farmed in Stanley Township
and ran a farm supply business
in Varna.
He married Sarah Reid in
Stratford on April 4, 1931. She
predeceased him in 1952.
Mr. Porter was a member
of St. Andrew's United Church
in Bayfield, where he was an
elder. He was also a member of
the Bayfield Lions Club and
the Masonic Lodge No 84.
He is survived by one son,
Gordon, of Bayfield, four
daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Kath-
leen) Siertsema of Bayfield,
Mrs. Garnet (Margaret) Wright
of R,R.1, Londesboro, and Mrs.
Ronald (Marion) Cornish of
Exeter; one sister, Mrs. David
(Marion) Davidson of Windsor;
and four brothers, Larne of
Exeter, Arnold of Goderich,
and William and Richard, both
of Goderich Township.
Funeral services were held
on October 3, from the Beattie
Funeral Home with Rev. J.
Reddoch in charge. Interment
was in Bayfield cemetery.
Pallbearers were LeRoy Poth,
Lloyd Makins, Ray Cox, John
Campbell, John Watson, and
Ross Merrill.

"The thing is that this type of
activity could jeopardize the
marketing ability of all produc-
ers, " Mr. Durand said,

about seven counties of Ontario
with Huron growing almost half
the total crop.
TO OPEN SOON - The adult workshop for trainable retarded at Dashwood is expected to open
some time this wee]., with the first group of trainees all set to begin working. The building is
located on property which formerly belonged to Dashwood Industries Limited, and the new work-
shop is a project of the South Huron Association for Mentally Retarded.
