IT'S OFFICIAL NOW - For some time the rumour has been
making the rounds that the Village of Zurich is growing in
population, !jut up until last week there was no concrete
evidence to support the story. Now, however, the Ministry of
Transportation and Communications has corrected the figure
on the signs at both the east and west end of the village. The
new figure is 820, up considerably from the last reported count
of 732.

Move to stop bean bootlegging
The bootlegging of white
beans to Michigan by some
Ontario producers- -who ironic-
ally ended up losing money in
the process --has been stopped.
Phil Durand, chairman of the
White Bean Growers Marketing
Board of Ontario, said in London
last Thursday all would-be bean
bootleggers will be stopped at
the border by Canadian customs.
Only registered agents of the
marketing board will be allowed
to transport beans into the H.S.
Ile said the move was ann-
ounced Thursday morning by
the Ontario Farm Products Iviark-
..:....040`
eting Board, an arm of the prov-
incial government that oversees
all commodity marketing boards
in the province.
Mr. Durand, of Zurich, said
an undetermined number of
Ontario bean producers have
'been selling their crops in Mich-
igan without going through the
bean board, as required by law.
Mr. Durand said the bootleg-
gers weren't breaking any inter-
national law as long as they
declared their beans at the
border.
They were violating provin-
cial and federal marketing leg-
islation which bans sales not
conducted through marketing
boards, he said.
These regulations have been
in effect for about 25 years but
were never enforced "there wa:
no need to until this fall.
He said the situation came
to light through the grapevine.
The bean bootleggers, he said
were trying to take advantage
of what they considered higher
prices than the board had obt-
ained on the market.
He said there is no accurate
estimate of the quantity shipped
