Zurich Citizens News, 1973-10-04, Page 12PAGE 12 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1973 Warning An urgent warning to the public has been released by the O.P.P. Anti -Rackets Branch regarding counterfeit fifty dollar bank notes. A flood of counter- feit fifty dollar bank notes has hit the province of Ontario in the last week. The notes are of excellent quality and very difficult to detect. As a result, all fifty dollar bills are suspect. Ten persons have been arrest- ed and charged since the week- end at Trenton, Collingwood and Peterborough. Notes have also turned up in London and Hamilton. Normally, counterfeit notes are imprinted with the same serial numbers, however, in this case there is a sequential variance of numbers which adds to the difficulty. Anyone accepting a fifty dollar bill during the next sever -i al weeks should be sure of the person's identity. The simplest method of det- ection is to hold the bill against a strong light which will'reveal an otherwise invisible number of planchets which are implant- ed in legal bank note paper. By using this method the ab- sence of an increased number of planchets is generally an indication that the bill is count- erfeit. If this should occur, contact your local police office immediately. If the suspect cannot be safely detained, obtain a full description and if possible the direction by which he leaves and the licence num- ber of any vehicle he may enter. Steer This Way BY LARRY SNIDER The "heavy-footed" driver is throwing money away, no matter what his average speed. Waste is not only in fuel, but in oil, rubber and ex- cessive wear on every moving part. A dirty windshield not only cuts down visibility but greatly in- creases eye strain. Noises following a cold engine start are no problem unless they persist when the car warms up. It rarely warrants fixing. Many police departments have adopted a special 9" x 5" side view mirror. With one of these properly placed on each fender, there's no blind spot behind you. 4 - Unevenly worn tires indicate that wheels are out of line. For safety and savings, have them checked. If fixing up your old car is beginning to cost big money, this may be the time to consider a new one at Larry Snider MOTORS LIMITED EXETER 235-1640 LONDON 227-4191 Huron Cwrnty's Largest Ford Dealer Drive in soon! Recreation The frost is on the pumpkin and Ontario's lakes and rivers no longer provide refreshing dips for hot summer vacation- ers. They are cold, deadly cold, for the hunters and fishermen who will be using boats to pur- sue there favorite recreations this fall. The Ontario Safety League states that prevention is the most sensible approach to the cold water hazard. Take every precaution to prevent falling overboard, swamping or capsiz- ing. This means keeping loads light, avoid high winds and heavy seas, do not stand up in a small boat on open water and curtail boating to daylight hours. Ontario Safety League accid- ent records show that a good lifejacket strapped over warm clothing provides effective protection against cold water immersion. It gives the victim additional time to escape from the cold water which he must tips do to survive. Wear a lifejacket at all times on fall boating trips it could be a lifesaver, Let's make this Lessons in Truth Week, suggests the Ontar- io Safety League. When you tell yourself it's all right to cheat on the traffic regulations or chisel on the safety rules now and then, are you telling yourself the truth? A gradual stop gives the driv- er behind you time to react and space to stop, says the Ontario Safety League, Here's a protection -packed pair of night driving habits from the Ontario Safety League -- reduce speed and increase caut- ion! Of course you dim your lights for other drivers, but what about pedestrians, asks the Ont- ario Safety League? They can see better when your lights are on lower beam, and there's less chance they'll be blinded into a hazardous act.
