Market gardening big business
An idea which started market -
gardening for a Shipka area
couple on a small scale four
years ago has bloomed into a
full time business.
Bill and Elva Rammeloo who
operate Farmer Bill's Market
gardening are in the process of
completing a large new green
house, on Concession 14 in
Stephen township, just north of
the Crediton road.
The new building of double
strength plastic construction is
124 feet long and 27 feet wide
and the heighth is 11 feet. In
addition they have built a 90
by 21 foot temporary shelter.
For the next few weeks the
Rammeloo's will be featuring
boxed plants. They now have
plants to fill more than 20, 000
boxes being transplanted and
ready for sale.
The gardening venture for
Rammeloo started in 1968 when
he planted a peach orchard.
They now have 600 peach trees
and visitors are allowed to pick
their own fruit in the fall,
Added on a fairly large scale
are strawberries, sweet corn and
tomatoes.
The Shipka area gardener
emphasizes that everything sold
from his farm is homegrown.
He added, "We sell only what
we grow. This way we control
quality."
Boxed plants now being read-
ied for sale include tomatoes,
cabbage, peppers, broccoli,
head lettuce, cauliflower, pet-
unias, geraniums, alyssum,
foliage, impatiens and mari-
golds.
The green house is constructec
of double layers of polyethelene
with air being pumped between
the layers to create and insulat-
ion barrier. Rammeloo estim-
ates saving up to 40 per cent
in heat by using polyethelene as
compared to glass.
A fan unit keeps air moving
continuously through an air
tunnel to prevent any accumul-
ation of stale air.
Temperatures are maintained
at 70 to 80 degrees for germin-
ation and dropped to below 60
for transplants.
All soil used in growing the
boxed plants is purchased and
is completely free of diseases
and weeks. Basic components
Pian bazaar
Things are starting to roll at
the Huron Country Playhouse
again. Fund-raising events and
preparations for the summer
theatre season have begun.
Sunday a committee met to
plan an event to mark the wind
up of the LIP program which
has resulted in a change of fac-
ilities at the Playhouse. Activ-
ities under the government
grant cease the end of this
month.
The event planned is an "old
fashioned country bazaar" ac-
cording to James Murphy. " We
want to show off what we have
accomplished, " said Mr. Mur-
phy.
Working on the committee
are Mrs. C. Livingstone, Mrs.
Pat Fletcher, both of Exeter,
Mrs. Wayne Woods, Dashwood,
Mel Douglas and Dave Shepherd,
both of Grand Bend, Donna
Klopp, Zurich, Roberta Walker,
Oakwood and Mrs. James Love
and Mrs. Bili Waters both of
Parkhill.
of the soil are peat moss, verm-
iculite and dolomitic limestone
The soil is sterilized only if
it is used a second time. Ram-
meloo says this soil allows for
an excellent root system of
plants because of the lack of
opposition of weeds.
The temporary shelter built
only this week will be used to
raise tomatoes and cucumbers
through the fall and winter
months. Farmer Bill expects
to have vine -ripened tomatoes
and cucumbers available up to
at least Christmas time.
In addition to fruits and veg-
etables, the Rammeloo's have
eggs and dressed chickens for
sale at all times along with
geese and ducks in the fall.
