Zurich Citizens News, 1973-05-10, Page 2PAGE 2 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Legion ladies elect officers The May meeting of the Hensall Legion Ladies Auxiliary was held in the Legion Hall Tuesday evening with the pres- ident, Mrs. Mildred Chalmers presiding. A donation of $10 was made to the Canadian Can- cer Society. It was announced that Mrs. Irene Davis was the winner of the Easter basket draw held recently and the proceeds of $80 will be sent to the Crippled Children's Treatment Centre in London. The annual Penny Sale will be held on June 1 in the Legion Hall, with tickets now on sale from any Auxiliary member. The zone rally will be held in Brussels on May 16. It was also announced that the meeting for June will start at 7 p. ni, in- stead of 8 p.m. Mrs. Irene Davis presided for the nomination and election of officers which is as follows: past president, Mrs. Irene Dav- is; president, Mrs. Mildred Cha- lmers; first vice-president, Mrs. Wanda McClinchey; second vice-president, Mrs. Hilda Smale; Secretary, Mrs. Donna Allan; treasurer, Mrs, Mary Bisback; Sergeant -at -arms, Mrs. Iva Reid; sports officer, Mrs. Iva Reid; pianist, Mrs. Mabel Munn; executive, Mrs. Martha Rooseboom, Mrs. Vera Smale, Mrs. 011ie Kyle, Mrs. Alice Neilands, and Mrs. Annie Horton. General meeting The May general meeting of the Hensall United Church Women was held in the Fellow- ship Hall of the Church on Monday evening. Mildred Kyle presided and welcomed every- one. Two members of the choir, Brenda Pepper and Gail Travers sang two lovely duets accomp- anied by Joyce Pepper on the piano. Anita Cook presented the devotional with the theme "Christian Faith in our time, " using scripture from Romans. Anita closed with prayer and read a humourous article from a Church bulletin from a church she had attended while visiting Florida. 011ie Kyle and Alice Ferg took up the offering. Elva Forrest introduced Doreen Spen- cer who showed beautiful slides on Greece and the Aegean Islands. Doreen's commentary added very much to the beauty of the slides. Elva thanked Dor- een and presented her with a gift. Kay Mock presided for the business portion of the meeting. About People Mrs. Milton Lavery is a patient in Victoria Hospital, London. Phil Ward is a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. Mrs. Wilbert Dilling is a pat- ient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. News of Varna Area The May meeting of the United Church Women was held in the basement of the church last Thursday evening with 23 members present. Group II were in charge of devotions led by Mrs. Roy Elliott who introd- uced the by im "0 Happy Home;' which was sung by all. Mrs. Aldie Mustard read the scripture and gave an inspiring reading on "Mothers Day." The offering was taken up by Mrs. Murdock Morrison and dedicated by Mrs. Harvey Hay- ter. Mrs. Roy Elliott and Mrs. Mervyn Hayter gave a reading "A tribute to Mother, " The business period was in charge of Mrs. Ralph Stephen- son. Mrs. Gordon Johnston read the minutes and the roll call was answered. "Thank -you" notes were read by Mrs. Ida McClinchey. Mrs. Bob Webster gave the treasurer's report. Forty-five calls were made to sick and shut-ins during the month of April. This part of the meeting was closed with the Lord's Prayer. A baking, candy and plant sale followed and was very suc- cessful. Grace was sung and lunch was served and provided by hostesses Mrs. Bob Stirling and Mrs. Murdock Morrison. The Varna Library, which has been in the village during the past 50 years may close, as the librarian Miss Edith Beat- ty, has resigned and if nobody in the village will take over the books will go back to the County library and the library here will be closed. MS EN CLUB OF HENSALL CYSTIC FIBROSIS NC (AU Proceeds For Cystic Fibrosis ) Saturday,May 12 9 P.M. Recreation Hall, Huron Park MUSIC BY of Hensall UCW Roll call was answered by 34 members and one guest. The treasurer's report was given by Doreen Spencer; supply and welfare by Mrs. Erratt; friend- ship and visitation by Mable Shirray. The social functions report was given by Mona Alderdice. She announced that a beef barbecue will be held on May 30 with three setting scheduled for five, six and seven p. m. Secretary Helen Searle read correspondence from White Oaks. An invitation was rece- ived from Centralia to attend a Blossom Tea on May 9 from 2 to 4 p. m, A notice was rec- eived announcing a weekend at Westminster College from June 1 to 3, and also an ann- ouncement that there are good news for modern man bibles available to buy for 504 each. The meeting closed with the Mizpali benediction. Members of Unit IV served a tasty lunch. News of Kippen Mrs. Dave Moir and Mrs. Don Carrjpbell and two children of Parry 86und visited with Mr. Robert Thomson. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs, Dennis Hallam (Former Louise Kirk) on the birth of a daughter in Clinton Public Hosp- ital. KIPPEN EAST The Health meeting of Kippei East Women's Institute will be held in the Legion Hall, Hensall May 16 at 8:30 p.m. Mrs. J. Chalmers is hostess and Mrs. Vern Alderdice is in charge of lunch. The roll call is "How I Relieve Tension" and bring a card for a shut-in. Mrs. R. Schwalm will comment on Hawaii and the 4-H girls will entertain.
